Okay, before we begin can you guess what this is about?

The seven colors of the rainbow

When I saw it I thought it was a person's name. It's actually named after a They Might Be Giants song, and does an absolutely terrible job of actually telling you what the trope is about. However we have a perfectly good redirect title for this in the form of Seven Colors Of The Rainbow (Spoilered for those playing guess the trope).

Er... it's not named after a TMBG song. Roy G Biv is an old-as-dirt classic mnemonic for the colors of the rainbow. The TMBG song is named after it.

Yeah, Roy G. Biv is a bit of an old term.

^That's simply because not that many people are instilled with it.

Agree, pre-existing term. Do people not take art classes these days?

That's not really the issue. As I observed via PM when someone raised the issue, I see a lot of use of Roy G Biv on the wiki for references to the name specifically, not to the "seven colors" concept. So the title is being misused rather badly.

Seeing how quite a few people have been named after this I would agree. (its on The Other Wiki page.)

For something that is akin to a Rainbow Motif trope this is really poorly used.

Roy G Biv: seven colors defined by physics. This is basic science class stuff.

I had no idea what this was until I read the article. I'm not a native English-speaker, though.

Is the trope about the seven colors alone? If not, then the name is too broad for the trope.

I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.

[up] It's about the seven colours being significant in a work, most frequently as a form of Colour-Coded for Your Convenience. Which is a little narrower, but as broad as is tropable.

But it's still narrower than the names of the colors themselves, which is what I'm getting at.

Colour names being mentioned isn't a trope. Colour names being mentioned and being significant is. The latter tends to be as broad as any trope gets.

Personally, I don't really have an opinion here. I mean, I knew what it was (it is a preexisting term, I learned it in grade school), but it seems like it's not doing well as a trope, so...

[up][up]My point is the name implies it's the colors alone. It doesn't matter if it isn't actually a trope. The name doesn't get a pass for implying People Sit On Chairs.

[up] But every single other trope that's named like this does. We assume that if something is a trope then it needs to have narrative significance. We don't name things Roy G Bi V With Plot Signifigance, or Hime Cut With Plot Signifigance.

Rainbow Motif trumps this as a title a dozen times over.

We have titles which are unclear because someone was trying to make a clever reference or was too eager with some off-kilter metaphor, but this is the first title I've ever seen which works on obfuscation for its own sake.

[up][up]Misuse has been mentioned, and if other tropes have similar misuse, they should of course be renamed.

Rainbow Motif is infinitely clearer than the present title, which does have misuse — I may do a wick check later if someone else hasn't already. Part of the problem is that the article is also getting edit wars over whether the precise classical seven colors (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet) are required or if it can be any seven colors that fall within the spectrum. After all, those colors are entirely arbitrary.

I think Rainbow Motif works fine. The current name apparently presents misuse, and can always stick around as a redirect...
