Rampant snowclone: Resuscitate The Dog

There is currently an YKTTW for I Need To Make It Right for when a character has made something bad/stupid, seen the effects, and now wants to fix it.

There is already a trope for this, Resuscitate The Dog, but that title suffers from the following problems:

It's a snowclone of the "verb the dog", but it has no connection with "shoot the dog", or any of the other "verb the dog" tropes. It also makes has no reference to the moral part of the trope, the "I need", which is central to it.

I would propose that we let the YKTTW go forward, and then redirect Resuscitate The Dog to the new trope.

Sounds like a plan to me. I can see the connection between Resuscitate The Dog and Shoot the Dog but it takes about three fairly long logical leaps to make it, and that at least two too many for a snowclone.

I thought it was snowcloned from Kick the Dog. Apparently they're completely unrelated, though? That bothers me.

51 inbounds, yeah, I can go with the Launch Displacement.

Resuscitate The Dog is a misleading snowclone to me, in that Kick the Dog is the most prominent trope and the one I assumed was snowcloned when I first read the title. In that trope:

->"What separates this trope from other evil or cruel acts is that not only is the act bad, it's also pointless as far as the plot goes."

So I'm set up for gratuitous acts of nastiness used to flags a character as a villain being undone, which is not the case. What we actually get is potentially well-meaning morally gray characters regretting an act they come to see as wrong.

I'm not so sure about using the YKTTW as a replacement: the existing text seems more complete and clearer and the new name sounds like a line of dialog and we're phasing dialog titles out.

In some ways it just seem different in that the current article is focused on the realization whereas the YKTTW is more about redemptive acts following it.

If we were to merge them I'd suggest finding a better title than either the existing article or the YKTTW and retaining much of the existing text.

^ Yes, the YKTTW is still an early draft, which will give some examples and a better title. Most of Resuscitate The Dog will probably be re-used, but clearer since the trope title will actually give a clue what it is about.

Since a rename implies a YKTTW being created as a result of the discussion, this time we simply got the other way around.

[up][up]The name issue has already been pointed out on the YKTTW.

If the two were to merge, the resulting trope would have to incorporate both. 59 inbounds is nothing to brag about, so it could work.

Ok, so the YKTTW is pretty much done, are we going to merge the two (and how), ditch one or the other, or simply change the trope name?

[up] About what I was wondering too, on the best way to proceed.

Going to have to do some reading on it, unless someone has the Cliff's notes.
