The History Of TV Tropes

So, I'm curious; what was the wiki like before late 2009?

Also, I'm kind of in-the-dark about this Wiki's creation.

Can someone fill me in?

Also; this thread can be used for discussing things you used to be fond of, or Tropers that bit the dust.

Well we all know which troper I'm missing at the moment, but she hasn't been away for long enough for me to declare her gone.

Ruthie A was cool - shame she's not still around.

Didn't the whole server implode or something around 2008 and the tropers had to band together to put everything back where it was?

@Haldo: That was The Great Crash. Something oddly similar happened to Transformers Wiki in 2009.

Also, one of the founders was called Gus, but he's not around anymore. This site's origin has something to do with a Buffy The Vampire Slayer fansite, I think.

Matrix used to be our token creepy depraved guy, Jethro was the sole Memetic Sex God until Lull showed up, and I was the first on-site liveblogger. :3

Bobby was the second liveblogger, wasn't he? Or third?

the site came about because of a derail at Buffistas Dot Org, I think.

As for history, I've been lurking, and I sorta miss the days when Noimporta, Jethro and Lull posted more.

Who's Lull?

Lull sounds familiar...

His name now is Doktor Disko, I think.

I was the one who inspired Slowzombie's Dark Yagami liveblog. I still think that's my greatest contribution to the site.

I found nothing at Tropers.Lull or Tropers.Doktor Disko.

Lull is a conqueror. A man of legend.

Gus was one of the founders, yes. He passed away, sadly.

I know I was one of the early livebloggers, don't know if I was the second. I liveblogged Twilight.

The Great Crash was in 2008? Shit... that's a long ago, it feels like yesturday. I'm a fucking geezer on this site.

There was the incident when some muslim hacker brought the site down and put up a video for a muslim charity. The security leak was via the old forums, so Eddie and the crew programmed the one we're using today.

I still remember when all tropes used to be in one, long master list the Warhammer 40,000 article. I remember when I could still daily catch all the new articles and forum posts. But that's kinda irrelevant to the history in general.

All I know, is that the site was born out of the co-operation of a few people on different online commmunities, the large examples sections were not a part of the initial design (Janitor thought up that it was what really got people into the site).

There used to be just one wiki domain, "real life" examples were littered with what are now called Troper Tales. There used to be a time when almost every article featured Stickman And Cube.

[ed.] and just for the sake of egotism, see Jethro Q Walrustitty for my contributions to the Wiki. not that many household tropes, but some really prominent in fiction (I'm in particular proud of Shaving Is Science, it's my first and really, best.)

Scary, innit? I remember the Great Crash happened shortly after I got known, and I still feel kinda like a newbie a lotta the time.

Actually, the scary thing is when you realise that half the people you used to regard as the "old guard" aren't even around any more, and half the current old guard got known after you did.

They should make a movie out of The Great Crash.
