Yup. A thread devoted to nothing but discussing SEGA's 16-bit console that was extremely popular in the 90's and the console that made SEGA a successful company in the United States. Discuss.

Un-frickin-touchable.

Gunstar Heroes was epic and had one of the best bosses ever:

Alien Soldier has got to be the best game on that system. Also by the folks who made Gunstar Heroes.

A number of high quality Genesis games have been reissued in compilations, and are being sold through online services. But there's plenty of worthy games which are only available as 16-bit carts. So if you can think of specific games which need a re-release or a revival, be sure to say so.

Things I thought were awesome about Sega's 16-bit system...

  • All three iterations of the Genesis had cool colors, and I thought their designs were sleek. The first version even included a plug for headphones.

  • The controller. Compared to the rectangle-shaped NES controller, it's ergonomic. Same number of buttons, but three action buttons, and a pause button that's easy to reach. Needed a longer cord, though.

  • There was an adapter that let people play Sega Master System games on a Genesis.

  • For several years, Genesis games were sold in sturdy plastic boxes. This made it easier to keep the carts clean.

...and a couple YMMV things...

  • Sega's marketing. It was aggressive and usually combative. Yeah, it worked to sell stuff, and it "branded" fans. And it probably makes sense in the context of '90s stuff aimed at kids and teens. But I dunno what to think about it...

  • Some of the add-ons and accessories. Okay, every successful system has some questionable stuff. But there were two devices meant to enhance the system (Sega CD and 32X). And a few accessories have a very bad reputation (Activator and Batter Up).

Rocket Knight Adventures was the best game on that system.

No contest.

I really like Shining Force. I need to play Phantasy Star, though.

EDIT: What is OP's favorite Genesis game?

[up]I just beat Shining Force last week or so. I love it although I think the second one is better. A lot of people seem to HATE Ken but I tend to find him pretty useful for at least half the game.

I tried Kokiji and he was decent at first but always seemed to have to play catchup, and towards the end he became pretty lousy. Bleu I never had the patience to deal with, I hear that he's godlike(better than Arthur and Musashi even) but it seems like the effort just to get him that good is as much as it is to get through the game without him. Arthur you at least get early. Bleu just comes at a bad time, and right before one of the hardest bosses in the game.

My favorite members are probably Zylo, Guntz and Domingo, who's like a flying rocket-propelled fortress with a magic cannon attached.

The Sega Genesis was one awesome console. I keep mine around for Thunder Force II-IV (the first was only on obscure Japanese computers, sadly), Dungeons & Dragons: Warriors of the Eternal Sun, and the superior version of Battletoads.

Needs more love.
