Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! I'm editing this OP and pinning it to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

I didn't mind Selvig in Avengers, but the more I think of it he took up valuble space. Having either Pym or Banner be the brainwashed scientist meant you could have more time devoted to actual Avengers. Along the same lines I've always thought Maria Hill shouldn't have had an action sequence, although partly that's because it was a fairly run of the mill car chase.
Selvig in Thor 2 really annoyed me. He wasn't funny or really necessary. In general I think the MCU over estimates how good any OC with a positive reaction is. I liked both of Darcy's appearances, but they need to be careful she doesn't become obnoixous if she reappears.

Am I a good man or a bad man?Didn't really annoy me, but any scene with Selvig where Thor was not also there I just didn't really care.
Scenes which nobody cares about should be edited out of films.
Am I a good man or a bad man?Selvig was kind of a bit much, but it seemed like if they pivot Thor over to spend more time on Earth, they could use more connections of his. Still, that direction clashes with how that movie ended.
The sad, REAL American dichotomyAfter finally seeing Thor a year after I watched the avengers, I realized that Selvig was a OC.
I'm not entirely sure on the details, but yeah, I'm pretty sure that really is more or less Rocket Raccoon's origin story. There was even a Rocket Raccoon & Groot miniseries not long ago that brought his origin into the picture as a major part of the plot.
Comics, amiright?

I liked Selvig in The Avengers, and in The Dark World, but wasn't too fond of him in Thor. Funny, huh?
Weird in a Can (updated M-F)Whedon was very vocal about the fact that he was not happy with the gender diversity of the team (or lack thereof) so I imagine giving Hill the opening action scene was his way of trying to make up for the film's use of The Smurfette Principle.
No, because I really don't care about Pym nor did I the first 3000 times we discussed Pym not being an Avenger and why that happened.

It's not like I listed multiple reasons or anything, but sure, let's jump on the one.
The sad, REAL American dichotomyThe gender ratio of the team is partly Whedon's fault. Since the 70's the Avengers have been at least 4:1 or 5:2, at least untill Dissassembled. He's the one chosing which characters appear, I for one don't see why this sequel needs Pietro.
Maria Hill doesn't make up for the lack of superheroines, and giving her a fairly boring action scene at the start of the film wasn't a great idea. (I guess it could also have been included to show non superheroes failing to beat Loki, but it still wasn't appealing).
Am I a good man or a bad man?Oh no I agree about the sequel. I mentioned before I found it annoying that he apparently had a choice of who to use and so far it looks like his only new recruits are three white (well one red plastic played by a white guy) heroes, two of whom are men.
But in the first film at least he said he had no say in the cast.
I wouldn't jump on it if people didn't bring up "Bu...but Tony didn't make Ultron in the comics!" at every available opportunity.
Since we don't know what's the plot like yet, we can't be sure if it 'needed' Quicksilver or not, but in a meta sense, I suspect the studios wanted to use the very few X-Men related characters they could, maybe to appeal to an even wider demographic range, maybe just out of sincere fan enthusiasm from their own part.
Whedon DID try to include Wasp, but she was cut out.
I wonder if Hydra really is showing up in Cap 2 that we will get to see Madame Hydra or a young Jessica Drew or something.
"War without fire is like sausages without mustard." - Jean Juvénal des UrsinsI'll see Avengers 2 just to see how Whedon uses Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch after X-men days of futures past does. I mean outside of being starter villains for the original 5 X-men I never cared about these 2 but the comparison in usage does deserve documenting.

There were some rumors the Korean woman who joined the cast in AOU might be Madame Hydra.
And a better look at the Guardian merch.
I actually thought the Nova members looked better as toys than the film stills we've seen so far.
Man, I hope the Guardians trailer just goes all out and embraces its inherent weirdness.

I'm getting Green Lantern vibes. "Let's make a cool superhero movie about space and aliens! Okay, now let's pick a boring, generic, immature man-child as the starring character!"
