Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! I'm editing this OP and pinning it to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Heh, that would be funny if the movie had that.

According to Wikipedia he's been genetically altered.

I think it varies by adaptation.

From what I remember Rocket Raccoon started out as an Earth raccoon that was genetically altered. Now he's a alien that happens to look like an Earth raccoon.

I have no idea why Marvel Studios isn't trying to capitalize on the 4th of July.

I've been saying pretty much this since the release of the first Captain America movie.

He's Captain frikken America, for crying out loud. He ought to get the 4th of July weekend by default!

I'm still surprised that neither of the Thor movies were released on a Thursday.

Spoilered out for obvious reasons:

One of the Olympic TV Spots for Captain America The Winter Soldier showed Alexander Pierce saying his "Gift to Mankind" speech in a room same to the one we see the Winter Soldier in at the beginning of the trailer. We even get a clearer view of Ed Brubaker in his cameo. So yeah it's pretty much confirmed that Pierce has a hand in the organisation assocaited with Winter Soldier, which may as well be HYDRA.

[up] Funnily enough, the usual release date for films here in Aus are Thursdays, so technically we got both Thor films on Thors- I mean Thursday.

Generally speaking, in the States, releasing a movie even a day earlier than Friday is seen as a vote of no-confidence. It means the studio doesn't trust it to make a respectable amount opening weekend and so is using the additional time to inflate the grosses.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

Depends on the time of day, I work at a theater and most of the time new releases show up Thursday night.

A lot of theaters have a single advance showing late Thurs night (usually around midnight local time), but Friday is traditionally the first full release day for a new film, due to what Wack'd mentions.

Yep, so when someone says "Friday premiere", they usually mean "I'm going to go wait in line Thursday evening". Some theaters, my local one for example, show certain movies Thursday evening too. For example, I saw Hunger Games 2 at 5:30 on a Thursday.

Is anyone else not really excited for Avengers 2 yet? This whole Hank and Tony thing has gotten me down. That, plus I'm caring less and less about Black Widow, I feel it may be overloaded on characters, and I haven't yet seen enough of Scarlet Witch.

Not being a slave to comic canon, the Tony/Pym thing doesn't really bother me. tongue

That said, given that there's still a lot about A2 that's not yet known, I'm reserving judgement on any excitement beyond continuing the MCU line.

[up][up][up] Pretty much. I'm mostly concerned with the Vision though, he's not just a robot dammit.

More and more I wish Avengers had chucked out Widow and Scandanavian scientist and put in Wasp and Pym instead.

Rocket Raccoon was the director of a space asylum. The architects of the place thought that the crazy people would handle funny talking animals better than regular orderlies. They engineered a wide variety of animals for the place.

[up][up][up]We weren't talking quality, we were talking anticipation.

[up][up]Eh, Selvig worked just fine for me. A minimum role that blended well into the Verse. Due to his connection to Pym, I might have preferred if we got to Pym sooner, especially with A2 and Ant-Man being back to back, but what are you gonna do? Black Widow was alright, because she was already established, and the role was more up her alley.
I feel that if Pym were to be introduced, he'd need a meatier part than Selvig had. Janet might have worked with Hill's role, but you kinda needed Hill for that movie and a more well rounded expansion of the MCU.
