Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! I'm editing this OP and pinning it to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

The only thing about JJ that made me sorta uncomfortable were the sex scenes early on, mostly because I was worried someone would walk in and get the wrong idea of what I'm watching. tongue

I don't mind the violence or darkness though.

The sex scenes didn't bother me at all...they were pretty harmless overall. But I guess it's different for Americans. It's the gore which I have trouble with.

How could anyone be bothered by 2 scenes of humping?

When I first finished Jessica Jones I was so emotionally worn out that I felt as though I wouldn't be able to watch it until MUCH later but right now I feel raring to watch it again because of how goddamn good it was. I've just been busy with other stuff.

The sex scenes took me a moment to get used to because it felt like "WHOA, that just happened out of nowhere!" I needed to like, pause to recollect my thoughts before continuing.

I need to watch Jessica Jones again.

[up][up]'Cause it's gross?

Luke's "sweet Christmas" afterward killed me though.

It just seems...silly to be bothered by it.

More eye-rolly and "ugh"-y than actually upset or unnerved.

Even that. Keep in mind I'm not talking about any person here.

Wait, Luke said "Sweet Christmas" there? I couldn't hear it.

He said it while they were laying side by side in bed just after sex, though I forget which time.

I was slightly disappointed since I always hoped his first "Sweet Christmas" would be him shouting it hammily as he burst through a wall out of nowhere while clad is in his semi-iconic yellow t-shirt.

I'm in the camp of "good, but not Daredevil good". Yeah, the characters are on point and really well-developed, but I don't think Daredevil's were so poorly written that that's some kind of huge advantage.

By contrast, I see a much wider gap between the story structure of Jessica Jones and the story structure of Daredevil. The show really needed more villains or cases that weren't connected to Kilgrave.

[up][up]They're saving that for Luke's own show.

[up] I know, But it's still his first televised "Sweet Christmas"...

[up][up] I think depending on the sort of thing people want from their media.

I found Jessica Jones's characters and emotional beats to be much stronger than Daredevil's and outshine's Daredevil's tighter and deeper based plotting.

Maybe it was disjointed or it spinned it's wheels too much, I didn't really notice because that's not what I was getting out of it.

Daredevil may have slightly weaker characters and themes, but altogether it's a better package to me.

Interesting. I'm not as familiar with their works as the rest of geekdom is but I'm fully aware of their reputations so on behalf of geekdom I suppose I must ask "were the Marvel execs high!?"

It's like they took the opposite of whatever Super-Crack superhero comic book writers usually take.

Guillermo Del Toro's style is too eclectic for even Marvel.

I've yet to watch JJ. Probably will soon.

Question about it: so my main problem with daredevil is I don't think it fleshed the plans of the villain out enough. Loved Fisk as a villain, but I still couldn't tell you what his overall plan was throughout the series or what he was actually doing as a philanthropist or a crime Lord.

Will I feel a similar issue in JJ you think?

What JJ's villain wants to do is a very different type of villainy to what Kingpin wanted to do but it's exceedingly clear what he wants.

You know, Luke Cage's self-satisfying grin when he was laying beside Jessica was one of my favourite things in the show...

I was very happy with the take on Luke.

Quiet and understated, but still a giant of a man. He cares about people's perception of him, but that insecurity doesn't affect his conduct.

While I like the hammyness of Luke Cage single handedly invading Latvia and beating Doctor Doom senseless while saying only 'Where's My Money Honey?' over and over because Doom owed Luke $20, it's not something I want to see in an adaptation.

I hope the Defenders at some point consider the fact that in universe they are role models. It's one of my favourite things about Luke Cage as a character is that he considers what effect his existence has on the perception of his race.

On different news: http://marvel.com/news/movies/25495/marvels_captain_america_civil_war_trailer_shatters_world_record?linkId=19181480

Which prompts me to threw out a "told you so"...not to anyone here necessarily, but people have called me crazy for months when I kept saying that this movie has the potential to end up in Iron Man 3 territory with its box office. Naturally just watching the trailer doesn't mean that all those people will actually watch the movie, but it's a nice little argument to have....
