Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! I'm editing this OP and pinning it to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Oh I see, he's trying to disprove my earlier statement about Marvel Cinematic Universe Super-Strength feats.

Well, Tony's armor lets him bench 100 tons in the comics so I'm happy he can at least punch a hole in a wall while wearing it.

But for the most part the Hulk still has the best feats of Super-Strength compared to everyone else that shares that power and doesn't wear Powered Armor.

This isn't a complaint, I understand why it's done and I'm fine with it.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, raw strength seems to go: Hawkeye < Black Widow < Bucky = Captain America < Iron Man < Thor < Hulk. The size of the gaps between these characters is up for debate.

It's not really that hard to guess there are varying levels of Super-Strength here (i.e., Super Weight). Cap's obviously much stronger than normal people, but they can still kind of hurt him. It's probably the same in strength difference between Cap and Iron Man, who in turn gets outdone by Thor, who in turn gets outdone by Hulk.

[up][up][up][up]Yeah. I mean, it was very first MCU movie, so saying Cap is the non-Hulk standard setter for strength feats felt off to me.

Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Lash, Bucky, and Captain America all look basically equal to me in terms of Super-Strength.

[up]Bucky's an interesting case, since one part of his body outclasses the rest of him.

Bucky's arm is meant to mirror Steve's shield.

I seriously need Civil War to confirm that Bucky's metal arm is made out of vibranium that was stolen from Wakanda.

Which is why Black Panther is fighting him in the trailer.

You'd be surprised what even normal human can do when we turn off those limits our brain impose that keep us from hurting ourselves.

Little late to this party. I'd say that Cap might have border line Super-Strength. He's capable of whatever a human using their full physical strength can do, which varies from person to person.

Taking the quote above into account, the Serum boosts him up to his full potential, keeps him there, and lets him push himself for much longer, and much harder than a normal person could hope. As already pointed out (and something I never thought of) all those limiters that are in place in the body to prevent it from Damaging itself when we go beyond our limits are either taking permanent vacation in Cap's body, or simply finding that they can let things go on a little longer than the norm.

Since we never see him pulling any huge Strength feats (outside of sending people flying when he hits them hard enough), it's still tough to tell his full limits, but I'm betting he can probably do that kind of stuff that most people only due under extreme stress (like lifting a small car) if he pushes himself hard enough.

He's still well belong....say Spiderman in raw physical strength and endurance, and he's close enough to a normal well trained human that they can still give him a run for his money, but I'd say he'd outlast most of them.

As for him versus Tony in raw Strength, Depends on the suit Tony is wearing, but most of the time, I give it to Stark.

Um, that vibranium was used for Ultron. We saw that in the last film. The producers have even described his motive as "investigating why a bunch of vibranium got loose and attacked the world". It's about Ultron.

I get that, but I also think that Bucky's metal arm being made out of stolen vibranium would be a cool plot point.

It could be both.

He has to have some reason for wanting Bucky and I don't think anyone in universe is going to be saying Bucky was somehow responsible for Ultron.

I'm guessing T'Challa's dad may have died in that bombing that Bucky is being framed for.

Yes, especially since Feige said his dad was still alive as of Age of Ultron. Him thinking Bucky killed him would be a logical way to bring him into the plot.

So to get it straight: it looks like there's now a dent in the rumors about the Accords/SHRA being caused by Wanda being the fallguy due to Crossbones being a suicide bomber who explodes in her presence. Unless it's a separate incident than the bombing Bucky seems to be getting framed for.

Cap ist strong enough to hold a human pyramid on a motor bike over his head. He should be strong enough to at least try to hold a helicopter.

And I think that he is stronger than either Luke Cage or Jessica Jones. Luke is apparently not much stronger than a normal person, his superpower is to have unbreakable skin. (and may I mention how much I enjoy the fact that he is the defensive, passive power while Jessica has the active aggressive one?). Jessica is just strong enough to stop a slow moving car and is immediately in disadvantage if she encounters another strong being with fighting experience, since she has none but always relies on her strength.

Comics!Luke Cage can lift 25 tons, and is capable of fighting Namor underwater.

Netflix!Luke Cage looks stronger than Jessica, but weaker than Cap.

[up]That is more about his unbreakable skin, though. A normal person can damage a wall by using a hammer on it.

[up][up][up]No, he wasn't? He punched through a wall, but it wasn't metal. In fact, he explicitly couldn't punch through a police car door. He is strong, but not that strong.

Anyway, personally I never really got a sense of how strong he actually was in the series. I've seem people mentioning he was weaker than Jessica, but that didn't seem clear to me at all.
