Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! I'm editing this OP and pinning it to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

Skating blithely over what problems there may be with casting a white person as the Ancient One, I'd question Swinton's casting more on the grounds that she doesn't look nearly old enough. Sure, immortal wizard, but you'd expect someone called The Ancient One to look the part.
You fell victim to one of the classic blunders!Marvel should just go ahead and adapt Jimmy Woo or have him join the cast of Agents of SHIELD. I'm OK with an Asian Iron Fist, but if he's not going to be Asian then I'd rather him be Latino than black, since he's supposed to contrast with Luke Cage.
An Author's Saving Throw against criticism in a DVD special feature shouldn't be considered ironclad canon. Like, the Agent Carter special has already been effectively exiled from canon now that we have the Agent Carter series, which is the same thing but as a TV show.
"The Real Mandarin" is a Schrodinger's Character until he actually shows up in a movie, which he probably won't because they're not making any further Iron Man films. It was just a bone Marvel threw to fans who were displeased by the Mandarin development.

My Tumblr. Currently liveblogging Haruhi Suzumiya and revisiting Danganronpa V3.I'm fine with that. It's not like we should expect our heroes to take down every single morally dubious person in the entire world, there will always be evil slipping under the radar.
You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique! The DVD shorts are like the tie-in comics. If you like them, great, but the guys actually making the films and TV shows don't seem to give a piss about them.
My Tumblr. Currently liveblogging Haruhi Suzumiya and revisiting Danganronpa V3.Just got back from seeing Age of Ultron (finally). Enjoyed it, though I was confused by Steve's whammy. Was he just being reminded that he missed out on having a chance with Peggy?
(V)(;,,;)(V)Huh? Where did you pick that from? The showrunners of Agent Carter have said repeatedly that the short is canon and will remain canon.
Was he just being reminded that he missed out on having a chance with Peggy?
It's believed his dream was about how he only really thinks he's good for fighting a war and without a war, he's useless.

He got to the end of the war but didn't feel right. His fear is that he can't be happy outside the battlefield pretty much.
Kevin Feige directed Item 47 and he's right at the top of the Marvel Studios. While I agree that the real Mandarin thing was just a tossed bone, I don't think they'd go so far as to let their filmmakers ignore the shorts, not with that level of involvement. (That's for the tie-in comics. )

Even if they are canon I doubt most of the shorts will be followed up on.
Personally I think running so far away from stereotypes that incorporating any widely-known aspects of a character's culture of origin into a character is 100% off limits is probably not a good thing.
I don't see anything wrong with an Iron Fist of Asian decent as long as every single person of Asian decent in the story isn't just assumed to be a martial arts master.
It's the similar deal in my opinion with the true Mandarin. If Marvel decides to go down that route (if not in Iron Man 4 then perhaps on a TV show or a hypothetical standalone War Machine movie), then it's a relatively simple matter for both the Chinese government, the Chinese people people, and anyone of Chinese decent, to be just as ticked off at the Mandarin as everyone else is.
Oh shit I thought of something.
Mandarin-ception!
Just have like, anyone in a secret crime organization claimed to be "The Real Mandarin" each and everytime they get discovered.
Seriously, I would say that the Danny Rand of the Netflix show be a Kwai Chang Caine character, a mixed raced.
I don't know anything about Warhammer.
I was gonna say that making Danny Rand of mixed heritage seems like a fairly reasonable compromise.
You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!Basically, an entire group of people who's gimmick is looking EXACTLY like their founder and ALL of them claim to be him.
Except the ones who claim to be his identical twin brother.

And then it turns out Trevor Slattery was the real Mandarin the entire time, bringing it full-circle.
You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!Yeah, that's similar to what I suggested. Sounds fun.
It would be interesting if the organization was called the Ten Rings because there were ten different cells across the world and each of them had a leader that wore a ring.
Honestly if they ever had to use the real Mandarin just make him the antagonist of a Shang-Chi movie or an Avengers sequel prominently featuring Shang. Win-win. You work around the issues of Shang's arch nemesis being Exiled from Continuity while having a heroic Chinese hero/role model so people don't claim the film is racist or guilty of anti-Chinese sentiment.

Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau Project
The Mandarin was already changed
Nope, the real Mandarin actually exists and did not make an appearance in Iron Man 3.
