So I was wandering the Steam Store and I found this interesting game. It looks to be an open world Cyberpunk game. It looks interesting but there is next to nothing on game news about it nor are there any reviews yet. It was just released today, 7/29/2011. Anybody here played this game, know more information about what its about or whether or not its worth buying?

Same here, I'm also interested in what the game is about but dunno much about the game itself. Hopefully Total Biscuit does a WTF is for it soon.

Looks like it's on the Source Engine. Interesting.

My first impression (upon looking at it) is "Deus Ex meets Crysis". That said, I actually bought it and am installing it now. When I get to playing it, I'll post my thoughts.

Same here. Looks pretty good. My first though when I saw "indie" was "oh no, bad quality" but it looks pretty solid from the gameplay videos.

Also, it seems it's Deus ex meets Crysis meets Lovecraft, because there's both a "terror meter" and a "Paranoia meter"

Well, I played for about an hour (most of it was me trying to get used to the controls and interface) and beat what is apparently the tutorial level, and all I can say is, holy crap this game is complicated as hell.

Equipped items slow your movement speed (it also has that "spaced" inventory system similar to Resident Evil 4 where you gotta fit the items in boxes), you can get hemorrhages which have to be treated, you apparently gotta keep your mind in check and avoid going insane (haven't gotten far enough to understand how that works yet), there's a weird hacking system which I still don't fully understand (it seems to be kinda like a "battle" between you and the hacking target), and there's all these different powers and options that you can equip to your quick-select menu.

Heck, the tutorial list has I think 28 different videos, and some of them don't even fully explain what they're about (like the hacking one). Others are pretty pointless, like the "how to use a firearm" one.

I, personally, just have to play it a bit more to understand it fully, but it looks to be a pretty good game. It has that FPS action with the stat progression and depth of RPG games. It claims to have non-linear progression and gameplay, so replayability is definitely ensured.

So, essentially, a very complicated FPS?

Not sure if want.

[up]That's exactly what I was thinking. Just looking at some screenshots made me a bit nervous about it.

It'd be so much easier if there were a demo...

Looked at a gameplay video out of curiosity and... iron sights? The way your character tilts the gun when leaning out of cover is a nice touch though and the city is absolutely beautiful.

It's deus ex with a slightly less RPG and a shitload more FPS.

Think of it as Human revolution...for hipsters.

Also the complexity is only overwhelming at first. It's more of a "holy shit there's a lot of info and options what do I do" than "Oh damn it what button does x".

In my opinion, at least.

Yep, sounds cool to me. I'll pick it up when I get the money. Nice to see an FPS/RPG hybrid that doesn't hold your hand too much.

Shoul definietly give me my RPG fix until Human Revolution.

It's funny, someone above mentioned the big indie boom recently. Human Revolution is the only big name game I'm looking forward to. But then, it is deus ex.

Also, Anyone heard of something called Nuclear Dawn? Steam store says its supposed to be a full on FPS/RTS hybird.

Does that mean like Battlefield 2 was, or like C&C meets Battlefield?

based on the screenies, it looks like the "commander" player (who is voted to the position) has access to an RTS minimap, and the ability to both call in tactical abilites (air strike, artillery, etc) and place buildings such as medical tents, radar, stealth spotters.

Meanwhile, the grunt players have several classes available to them, and can recieve mission objectives from the "commander".

Basically, its an FPS, or if you're the commander, an RTS where your units are controlled by other people.

On E.Y.E and it's devs, a quick search revealed that Streum On Studio made another RPG earlier, called AVA, that the new one is based on. A slightly longer search revealed it was actually a board game/RPG. And, well, that's all I got, and I'm curious - if anyone can say anything about it, it might give some insight. Then again, it might be a waste of time ;p.
As for E.Y.E. itself, even more curious. Hacking looks like it can give ridiculous amounts of options... I'll wait for more info before I try it, though.

Rock Paper Shotgun preview of EYE

Still intrigued but unsure, I've seen some threads saying that the game feels like a bit of a clutter and the stealth elements are kind of a bitch. It seems like a really ambitious game that lacks polish which is the kind of thing I usually love...will probably wait for more previews and reviews.

Well, I can definitly support the notions that the game doesn't hold your hand at all, the sheer complexity of its gameplay for instance. Even the backstory is mindbongingly complex. Just wait until you read the backstory in the Archive terminals, it details like 3 alien invasions, 5 intergalactic civil wars, 2 invasions from the supernatural and more secret societies within secret societies than I can count.

Apart from complex gameplay making it hard, the actual fighting part is a bitch too. Enemies respawn and you die easily.

While this might scare people away, I like the old-style complex hard-as-nails feel this game has. And I'm not even getting into the atmosphere and design, design which is best described as Cyberpunk Warhammer 40000. And the dreamlike surreal atmosphere really enhances the game.

Still, the savesystem seems really weird, and AI is less than average.

Also, those annoying GREAT CRITICAL HIT, PERFECT BACKSTAB, SUPRAREFLEX SAVED ME! popups should be removed.

Thinking about making a page for this game, anyone wanna start out? always sucked at wiki-editing.

Looks interesting... how's the multiplayer? That RPS preview mentioned it had 4 player co-op.

^^ I've heard the Co-Op is very hard to get to work, supposedly the creators of the game are making a patch, there's a guide on how to get it to work on their website.

For the moment, I'm getting an inordinate amount of crashing whenever I get killed or load a new level, which is not fun :/ Some shit about Loading lump 53 or whatever. Apparently that's an old Source engine error, so hopefully this will be patched soonish. In the mean time I enjoy the shooting and the various options, but the interface could certainly use some more love. The hacking is particularly underwhelming, which is annoying because the mini-game itself is fun: you've several hacking stats, your "opponent" too. you can use different viruses to affect their stats or yours. If they win, there is a chance that you get hacked, or even whacked in some cases.

The levels themselves are on the Darker and Edgier side of things, but fairly nicely done, with some nice touches like the homage to Ghost In The Shell in my first mission (the tank in the museum), or that Blade Runner touch in others. The temple HQ has got a good Warhammer 40 K vibe, but the sheer size of it is a bit annoying from a gameplay point of view.

Will wait a bit to give it another go as that load a level and crash crap is getting on my nerves right now :/

From Go G's forums:

Okay I actually judged this game too harshly and too quickly. One of the main problems with indie games and Eastern European games is the lack of tutorializing and explanation. Normally this is not a big deal because it's stuff we have done a hundred times and don't need hand-holding for, but that game is a bit worse than others.

In any event, the game gets very good after a few hours of playing and further understanding of what it is. It IS multiplayer centered, I can't imagine anyone having a real argument otherwise. It IS kind of like an MMO in that character progression is why you are playing. It is NOT Deus Ex: The Indie Version, which I think a lot of people were hoping for. It is NOT Precursors or STALKER with cyberpunk themes.

Basically it is Borderlands without loot but with greater character customization, combined with Deus Ex style and abilities. The basic gameplay is you have a hub world from which you launch missions. Main campaign missions take you to new areas and have a rough storyline framed around them. You can also take side missions in areas you already played for bonus money and exp that have no real story ("destroy the enemy radar beacons!"). In very blunt terms the hub area has like 8 doors you can enter that go to 8 different maps (huge maps) and on these maps are MMO style missions where you blow something up, kill something, hack something or simply reach a destination. In the main story these maps change every mission and there is a thin story around it all, in side missions it is just exp farming.

For singleplayer gamers if you love cyberpunk and character development in an FPS it is worth a playthrough I suspect but I doubt you will fall in love with it. The enemies are basically bots and the missions are thinly developed. For coop gamers I think this could be a real great game... like Borderlands but dedicated to the PC, cyberpunk flavored and with deeply customizable characters.

I think that's a pretty good summary.

Hmm...not usually my thing I guess. Sounds like it'd be fun with friends though.

Ok, it is official: I love this game's hacking system.

Basically, there are four options: Possess, Hack, Destroy, and Steal.

Hackable targets include enemy soldiers, bank deposits, sentry guns, and security cameras.

Possessing a target lets you look through their eyes, and also allows you to force the hacked individual/sentry gun to fire on their allies. Hacking a target performs general actions, such as opening doors and shutting off sec cams, but if done on a sentry or enemy turns them to your side. Destroying a target is self explanatory, do it and the enemy will die, or if a camera/sentry gun will be destroyed. Finally, Steal will hack a bank account, if done on a camera/sentry refill your energy bar to full, and if done on an enemy they become paralyzed and you receive a 25% energy boost.

Oh yeah, there's a class system that works depending on your stats (whichever stats are highest detiermines your class), and the class tier is based on your level. The name of the top tier class dedicated to hacking (and the name of the achievement from becoming that class)? Puppet Master. Fuck yes'
