This just fucking depresses me.

And also why THQ is considered a MINOR publisher compared to the E As and Activisions of the world.

... Fuck.

I've been rocking Guerilla all week, and despite its flaws it's my favorite online shooter. This makes my heart sink.

“In today’s hit-driven, core gaming business, even highly-polished titles with a reasonable following like Red Faction face a bar that continues to move higher and higher,”

Bull-Fucking-Shit the industry today is only like that because developers make it that way.

Agreed, letting Armageddon's infamy fade away before having another go at it, as they did with Guerilla after the mediocre second outing, may be the best move.

That sucks... I remember playing Red Faction for the Gamecube for hours with my brother. The music was always real nice, the stages were interesting, the weapons were fun, and the AI was... well, the AI was god-awful, I don't know how many times they jumped to their death. But still, depressing news.

But... but... but...

Sandbox gameplay! With fully destructible buildings and physics?

Not everybody can afford the investment risk for creating big budget titles, so this is probably going to be happening to a lot more franchises as time goes on. I'm thinking that it's going to reach a point where smaller studios will release an A-grade game every two years or less, and fuel the production of those games with a bunch of smaller indie ones as a means to stay afloat.

And BTW Jonah, you mentioned that W H40k has a niche fanbase. Unless you're talking about the official boardgames and fluff material (even then they're pretty large as well), you haven't seen how much of a rabid fanbase it has in some parts of Asia, namely the Philippines and some Chinese communities.

I've seen the sales figures. Niche.

Exactly how bad were the sales to result in abandoning the franchise? Less than 1 mill? Less than 2 mill? If it was more than 2 mill then it's hardly a niche franchise and THQ is just being overly greedy.

On the bright side at least they didn't sack the studio...and those guys are now working with Guillermo Del Toro for an upcoming horror game so there's good news.

They are still doing Saints Row, so it's not that bad.

Armagedon was good, the first one not so much IMO, the second was average,

Bad news, but as long they are developing Saints Row, not complaining here

It's probably because of Saints Row being Volition's new hotness.

The thread title and first post is overly dramatic, as expected. THQ funded Double Fine's first two XBLA titles, so it's somewhat funny to watch the bipolar moodswing towards them.

So just because Red Faction's backburnered now doesn't mean it's dead for all of time. I Ps are I Ps.

Those were probably much lower budget.

I have never played a RF game but it's always sad to see another series go down, unless it's one of the ones I hate. Which RF isn't.

As long as THQ keeps Warhammer 40k things around, I'll be happy.

Hell, I don't care about a series going down. Too many sequels out already, I much perfer original I Ps. Tell me a dev gets off'd and then I'll be sad.

Guerilla was pretty weak, 2 was average. The only RF game that was good was 1, imho.

The IP might make its way over to a smaller developer looking for their first hit.

Well, this sucks to hear. The only game in the series I've played is RFII (completed with only 85 dead civilians...yay me!) but I did enjoy it quite a bit.

Guerrilla is a damn fine game, even if the mission "Air Traffic Control" is total bullshit. Yes, give us a stealth segment in the middle of a blow-stuff-up game.

...Incidentally, how ARE you supposed to go at that mission? If you go anywhere near the helicopters the turret guys see you and blow you to hell. If you attack the turret guys first, the soldiers get in the helicopters and use them to blow you to hell. And you can't solve it with heavy trucks because the valley is too narrow to fit them. Game FA Qs has no help in particular. What do?
