I'm picking up just about everything. But then again, I think most people should know that by now on the Fall 2011 thread.

Okay, so. This is a noitaminA show set in the future, where the naive highschool everyprotagonist (played by Kaji Yuuki) meets a strange person who inadvertently thrusts him into a rebellion against the evil authoritarian government controlling everyone.

There's even a large white building in the center of town.

I'm worried.

What exactly happened with Undertaker's robot pilot? She just bumps into an enemy machine and...has a heart attack and dies? It's really hard to tell.

Looks like it inflicts its damage upon the pilot as pain.

^x3 What?

Also, Steins;Gate is not an original anime.

I have been following this show for awhile ever since I heard it compared to Code Geass, which is basically my favorite anime. I'm not sure what to think based purely on the first episode, except that I will definitely watch the next episode.

Cons:

  • No real characterization. I get the feeling they're planning to buckle down and introduce the plots and characters starting next episode. I think they made a conscious effort to focus on the atmosphere for the first episode, trusting that a good enough visual/audio impression would keep people interested.

  • No real plot. We haven't gotten any explanation for the world or indication of what the story is about, other than Rebels vs. Authority. I certainly don't expect to fully understand the story/setting of a show after the first episode though, so this isn't too bad.

  • Weak/badly written protagonist. This could change, but I really don't understand why Shu would risk his life to go and deliver the Macguffin to a group of terrorists. He understands the setting, since he lives in it, so maybe it will be explained that he already has sympathies with them and has always wanted to help or something. But purely from episode one it just seems nonsensical.

Pros:

  • Great audio/visual performance. The slow pacing of the beginning, with the music video spliced with Idol girl (I haven't exactly figured out everyone's names yet) fleeing from the mechs was very well done and got me in the mood to actually pay attention. The art and style of the thing kept me interested the whole episode through, which is more than I can say for any anime I've watched for a pretty long while. So the director is quite competent in my book.

  • Somewhat unique premise. Sure, its rebels with vs evil authority with GIANT ROBOTS, but the robots are somewhat original and the main character does NOT fight with a mech. Instead he cuts them in half with a giant sword. Pretty cool idea in my opinion.

  • Mixed genre, by which I mean sci-fi mixed with magic (probably). This was one of my favorite things about Code Geass, and I'm glad to see another show working with the same concept.

  • No horrible characters. Your mileage may vary greatly on this one, but for a long time almost every anime I've watched has had at least one character in the first episode that just flat out pissed me off, usually the resident Moe-blob of the show. Though we haven't been given much characterization yet, at least none of the characters made me want to punch a hole in my monitor.

Overall, I'm definitely interested, but I only mildly optimistic. The show has a cool look to it, I just hope it doesn't dip too deep into genericness.

There's even a large white building in the center of town.

Isn't there a trope for that? I mean, big, menacing, unusually designed building in the middle of the dystopic town, that controls everything?

Pacing seemed kinda way too fast. I hope things actually get explained next episode, instead of rushing to "shitty protagonist gets superpowers!"

Music was so-so.

"Ability of a King"? Ah, I love playing Oddly Specific.

By the way, did the vial have a virus in it, or is it something else? Was the power-granting thing what they called "the key"?

Based purely on readability (not accuracy of translation, although I assume it's a by-product of good translation), doesn't commie have the superior subs in this comparison?

Commie's subs look like the official subs Funimation used so they are probably the more accurate ones.

If it has a plot then I have something to say about it!

Nice art, though the music playing while Gai beat everyone up was kind of overbearing.

I usually like noitamina so I have high-ish expectations for this. Can't really tell yet, though.

The whole "use your powers to extract things from a girl's chest" reminds me a lot of Dantalian No Shoka and the probably many other stories that have that, but it's not bothersome enough to make me want to drop it.

My reaction to Gai beating the guys up was 'great, they're showing us how badass this guy is by having him beat up complete nobodies. I sure am impressed.'

I felt similarly. Kinda "Well, they sure seen to want us to think this guy is Badass".

Which is funny because he actually beat them up unaided on screen.

It might have been better for him to chase them off with his reputation alone.

Hmm, so far...

I'd say it's OK. I love the music at the start, and Gai was pretty cool, but apart from that...

Not going to lie, I sort of tuned out in places and just stared at that bit of protagonist-guy's hair that's a different colour to the rest. That either says something about the plot of this show, my own personal attention span, or both. Probably both. tongue

I concur with most of the other people in this thread. It's very pretty, but painfully generic at the moment. Also, the main character reminds me very strongly of Shinji Ikari. Shunji, maybe? tongue

It might have been better for him to chase them off with his reputation alone.

Not really. Seeing someone chase another person off with their reputation before actually showing why they have that reputation can be kind of a copout. I'm not entirely convinced of Gai's badassery, but at least they've given us some sort of reason to think of him as such. More than they would have if those guys had just instantly run away because Gai is super special awesome or whatever.

Oh, and hi! ^_^ -waves-

Don't insult Shinji like that. He was a well-drawn and realistic character. Shu here is going through a large number of cliches and doing things for no reason other than that the plot says he's supposed to

-shrugs- I'm still sort of on the fence about Shinji himself, (I'll admit to only having begun to watch Evangelion recently, which does mean that the comparisons I draw will be rather superficial) so I won't argue with you there. Shu does appear to be a rather strong expy of his character type, though.

It was just a thought.

Regarding Gai, I think that just having them run off from his reputation alone wouldn't have done much to establish badassery - he seems to rank high enough that it could have just as easily established that they were scared of what he'd have had done to them instead of what he would've done personally.
