Instead make it a collage of screens from the same game, and put a map screen at the bottom.

I would add a couple more frames of gameplay, just to show how varied the place can be.

This is kind of thrown together, but how's this? I'll change it to look better. I'll make the images about the same size and get a clearer background. (it's a Metroid map, but... it's not very clear) I tried to get screenshots with visible HUDs.

Actually, I think a better (and less grainy) idea might be this:

Show just part of the map of a metroidvania game. A famous one might be in order, such as Super Metroid.

For the caption:

Not shown: broken bridges, sequence breaking opportunities, and...the rest of the map.

Also, I don't like the idea of a collage. For those who know what it is, it's a fetchquest, but for those who don't, it's also a fetchquest of references that they don't know, unless they each individually indicate something about a metroidvania. But here you've got a set of images from different metroidvanias, and even if they were from the same game, the multitude of images doesn't seem to be much different from a game with many levels.

Now, if your collage had to do with acquiring a powerup to get past an obstacle, that might be different.

Also, in ^^ that collage, two of the six foreground images are borderline cases and one isn't even a metroidvania.

I'll agree some aren't exactly Metroidvanias, but which one isn't? Pitfall? Here's a revised version.

Uh, Castlevania 1 isn't a metroidvania either. MMZ and CS are borderline cases.

Not to mention that Metroid 1 isn't a very well-regarded game, apart from its legacy.

What? According to the Vocal Minority?

[up][up], [up][up][up] I'm going to go ahead and say there's enough gray area on Cave Story and MM Zero for them to not count as examples for the page picture.

Mega Man ZX, on the other hand, would be a better example, even if the save points strewn about the landscape are also teleporters.

Raso's post #14 is still the best thing I've seen on this. I really like the quote.

Does that count as spoilers? It does list pretty much every type of barrier and every powerup available.

Then again, it's not something that's readily processed by the brain of someone who sees it.

And should we add references to Broken Bridge, Beef Gate, and/or Sequence Breaking?

Raso's post 14 or post 27 (in that order) are my preferences, I believe.

How about something like this (cropped to show just the map), so that it shows less spoilers than Raso's post 14 suggestion?

With the caption I suggested above:

Not shown: broken bridges, sequence breaking opportunities, and...well, the rest of the map.
