A thread where we can ask for certain kinds of music from our fellow tropers.

Right now, I'm searching for something baroque. Castlevania-ish, but by an actual band.

I don't have an actual suggestion, but you could have a look here.

Okay, you rockers. I need some music.

Something melodical, dynamic, energetic, and are ballads (that is, story in song form).

Actually y'know what? Just give me ballads that are striking lyrically.

Does anyone know any songs or composer who makes music like this?

OK, I just got an MP 3 player and I need to fill it. Does anybody have any good bands or songs to recommend? I listen to anything except for straight-up emo (too soft.)

I'm currently looking for something Visual Kei - the only artists I'm actually familiar with are Kaya, X Japan, and Mana. Ero-guro (erotic grotesque) preferred, but anything will do.

Sadly, I can't think of anything that fits the above request. Clearly, I needs play more videogamez. [lol] It seems as though the very thought of more Zelda and Metroid is melting my brain. grin

Since thespacephantom hasn't done it yet, I recommend Modest Mouse.

I haven't downloaded any new music in a while. Any good progressive rock bands out there?

d Roy: I was thinking it sounded like something Yuki Kajiura would write, before noticing she did write it. I'd say about a third of the music she makes is like that. The rest is a bit more experimental. Her group was called See-Saw but I haven't kept up with her in a while so that might have changed.

Edit: Looking at her page it seems she's done a lot since the last time I was actively looking for stuff by her. But it doesn't list any of her non soundtrack works.

I already listen to Coheed And Cambria...

Actually, I'm just looking for bands which use unconventional instruments and make it work... are there any?

I just listened to Meshuggah's "Catch Thirty Three" as a whole. ADSHSGFJSHFEGFEYEWERHRUthatwassofuckingAWESOME!!! The first six tracks were "just" general Meshuggah fare but at the end of "Entrapment", that bend. That glorious bend. Then "Mind's Mirrors" starts and I am like "holy shit, WHAT?!" and then everything else was just EPIC x 9000.

I'm already dabbling in songs from other Meshuggah albums ("Closed Eye Visuals" is AWESOME) but are there any other bands that do music like this and they are also good?

I know this is late and but for a prog band you may want to try out riverside. I particularly like second life syndrome and I think it is their best album.

Define "unconventional", or listen to some Baroque Pop.

I didn't write any of that.

[up] Yeah, something like Panic At The Disco's first album. "Unconventional" meaning they use instruments you don't usually find in rock bands, like cellos, theremins, glockenspiels, etc.

^^Then Baroque Pop sounds like the genre for you. I'd also recommend Flogging Molly, Korpiklaani, Xera, and A Hawk And A Hacksaw.

I didn't write any of that.
