My Steam profile is named Cyris, and tomorrow is my birthday. I bought quite a few games dirt cheap for the big summer camp sale that had been going on for the past several days, and now I can't think of very many more games I'd want.

What are some titles I could add to my wishlist, that someone may gift them to me? I'm looking for something that fits at least one of the following criteria:

-An older computer game you would consider a classic. What are the definitive PC games of the 90s and early 2000s?

-Something that isn't very graphics or resource intensive. Even on the lowest settings, the first Left 4 Dead, for instance, is barely playable on my 5-year-old laptop.

-A game designed around a refreshingly new concept that hasn't been explored much, if at all, in a game before. I think I just described a lot of indie games.

-Somewhat similar to the one above, a game that puts a new twist on a familiar genre, or is a throwback to a style that has long since fallen out of favor in a good way.

Is anything coming to mind for you?

Half Life is actually still pretty fun although I don't know if you can still buy the original. (And the Source Port is iffy at best.)

Torch Light is like Diablo 2. If you liked one you will love the other.

You can, actually. Or at least, you can get it with the Half-Life complete pack.

X-Com, UFO defense. (My 4th favorite game ever.)

Deus Ex.

Atom Zombie Smasher.

Flotilla.

Fate of the World.

A Reckless Disregard for gravity.

Penumbra: Black Plague.

Braid.

Eversion.

Freedom Force.

Magicka. (The only one that could pose a major problem to your system)

Uplink.

and holy crap thats a lot of games, most of them strategy though so IDK if you'd like them. I can go into more detail if you want, too lazy to do so right now.

I vote against Magicka. That game is terribly unoptimized and even brings higher end computers to their metaphorical knees.

Here's the thing with Magicka: Fun with friends, not so much if you're playing alone. Fun if your computer can handle it, complete and utter hell if it can't.

I must have been the most lucky person in the world with Magicka. Not only did I not have any problems with it, I managed to run it on high settings on my comp that can only run Starcraft 2 on medium. But they are quite right about the graphics issue, although I disagree on not being fun if you're alone.

Do you have Audiosurf? I got the game to play on my netbook, so you could probably get it to work on your laptop. It's a really fun music game—you can play it with any MP 3 you have, and there's a ton of different modes. Plus, it's cheap!

Current project: Cleaning up the Chrono Crusade examples one at a time. God help me.

I like Recettear... Fun store management sim with dungeon crawling elements. Has good humour value as well.

@Steve's old post: Yes, the original game (the Goldsrc version) is still being sold.

Anyways, for starters, I would recommend Valve's library of games.

I now go by Graf von Tirol.

Like I said, my Steam name is Cyris (or was it Cysma?). You can look it up to see my current wishlist and what games I already have.

It would also help in your recommendations to give a short explanation of each game, as far as why someone should be excited about it.

If you like Roguelikes (and I sure do) then I recommend FTL: Faster Than Light and Dungeons of Dredmor. Dredmor is humorous and very well-polished rougelike that, in my opinion, breathes new life into a genre that's otherwise frustrating to get into. FTL is more like a roguelike/management/spaceflight... you know what? here's Total Bisciut's video on the game, it explains things much better than I could.

Edit: Rouge Angles of Satin strike again.

If you wanna go old-school, Doom 2 is always a good choice.

I should point out that-

1) This thread has been dead for two years. Some threads you can necro, some you don't. In this case it's the latter.

2) Even if it were recent, we have a Recommendations forum anyways.

I say it's best if either this thread is locked, or eventually dies (again) of neglect.
