The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

@Token minority appeal: I suppose that has some appeal but I seriously doubt that will help much. Black voters aren't stupid. They're not going to suddenly switch parties just because the Republican candidate looks like them.
Given the general Republican attitude though, did they know that?

I wouldn't be surprised if Carson is still in it out of revenge on Cruz. He's not letting go of Ted's "dirty tactics" and even defended CNN, which has been made the villain of that incident by most of the GOP.

And to no one's surprise, with the DNC's ban lifted, Wall Street and other Democratic donor groups move to ramp up funding for Clinton

Okay, correction, this is apparently a General Election fund, not a primary fund.

They basically want to bombard the GOP from orbit with money.

Does anyone know how the sausage is made when selecting a leader for the DNC? Because while I have no complaints about how Clinton is handling this, the DNC's current leadership needs to be cleansed with fire.

The Other Wiki

The chairperson of the DNC (currently U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida) is elected by vote of members of the Democratic National Committee. The DNC is composed of the chairs and vice-chairs of each state Democratic Party Committee, two hundred members apportioned among the states based on population and generally elected either on the ballot by primary voters or by the State Democratic Party Committee, a number of elected officials serving in an ex-officio capacity, and a variety of representatives of major Democratic Party constituencies.
Basically party leaders elect.

And from what I remember, DWS was chosen less for her competence and more for her vast network of contacts she's built up.

The DNC removing the limits on Super PAC contributions is just the main line of attack against Sanders—the real defense are the superdelegates.

When asked on CNN to settle concerns that the system is rigged, Debbie Wasserman Schultz pretty much admitted that it is:

“Unpledged delegates exist really to make sure that party leaders and elected officials don’t have to be in a position where they are running against grassroots activists. We are as a Democratic Party really highlight and emphasize inclusiveness and diversity at our convention, and so we want to give every opportunity to grassroots activists and diverse, committed Democrats to be able to participate, attend, and be a delegate at the convention. And so we separate out those unpledged delegates to make sure that there isn’t competition between them.”

Trump calls Cruz a pussy, MSN focuses on people complaining about his coarse language and other candidates plan to try to use this against him.

I hate to be defending Trump, but um, seriously? The guy being willing to use foul language in a campaign is the least of his problems.

I was surprised it took him this long. But the fact that he was referring to Cruz's slight hesitation on supporting torture certainly leaves plenty of room for criticism (useless as it might be).

The thing is you're not supposed to curse like that when running.

The presidency is supposed to be a thing of prestige and class.

It causes the rich types to have their monocles pop out, so to speak.

[up][up]Yeah, but all anyone seems to care about is the fact that Trump swore.

[up]Yeah, but criticizing Trump for that is bullshit. (ha ha) Trump's already made it clear that his campaign is based on being a Cowboy Politician who doesn't have to play by the same rules as everyone else in Washington.

i'm torn on the issue of discourse in politics. I think maintaining the fiction that we all get along is fairly corrosive all on its own (i know, personally, for many high profile republicans, i'd just flip them the bird and move on in lieu of conversing at all), but I also like the idea of there being a space in American society where everyone is well-behaved.

I think Trump used that word deliberately, to further stir the pot but to also see if he can't work more curse words in and do the thing where he singlehandedly lowers the bar for discourse (since the idea is appeal to the workingman versus party elites, and average people curse a lot. The question is if they curse in their formal/business dealings, or are comfortable with people who do).

Technically Trump didn't call Cruz a pussy. Some woman in the crowd did, and Trump just repeated her statement for everyone to hear.

He was still the one who brought it up, intentionally. It's a hollow technicality.

He "only quoted her" on purpose, just so he could defend himself with that if called out on.

Ex Obama official says Clinton should quite the race. General Michael Flynn further stated that if he had done the things Clinton did he would "be out the door and probably in jail."

I've seen that guy give depositions to Congress before. He may have worked for the Obama administration, but he's very much not a democrat.

There is no reality where Clinton will face criminal charges unless the FBI is certain it can prosecute. This is too politicized an issue, and she too public an official.

However, if sources admit that the FBI has spoken with Abedin or any of Clinton's other top aides, then we can infer the investigation is looking for leverage. They need people to flip to go forward.
