The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

SACRIFICE KITES AND KEYS TO THE THUNDEROUS 'MERICAN GODS WHO CLAMOR FOR LIBERTY

Relevant.

Actually Relevant: Gen. John F. Campbell explains the situation concerning the airstrike that destroyed a hospital in Afghanistan.

"To be clear, the decision to provide (airstrikes) was a U.S. decision, made within the U.S. chain of command," Campbell said. "The hospital was mistakenly struck. We would never intentionally target a protected medical facility."

He also advises against the further troop withdrawals the president had promised last year.

Clinton turns Benghazi investigation against Republicans. In a new ad, Clinton uses the remarks made by Congressman Kevin Mc Carthy, in which he uses Clinton's dipping poll numbers as proof the latest investigation is doing it's job, to blast back at her opponents, claiming they are wasting time, money, and perverting the system for their own partisan agendas.

Nope and it'd be a ridiculously bad idea, if even possible to institute, because of two simple words: Which religion?

As others have mentioned:

America is the Religion.

America as a religion boils down to whatever the other religions already do: worship a bunch of words written in ancient paper.

Why is so goddamn hard to separate religious beliefs from the political ones? Most of the idiocy you see in US politics (along my country) is related to politicians using their religious beliefs to create laws and rule a goddamn secular state.

Because they believe in a principle of Absolute Good. They operate as agents of what they consider to be the highest authority, and as a mortal authority on Earth is it their responsibility to carry out that will. This is the fundamental danger of Absolute Good: it is a difficult position to argue against because Absolute Good is not subject to logic or reason or interpretation. It is not negotiable. It is absolute.

Believers in a principle of Absolute Good believe it is their responsibility to spread the Good. Not the moral concept of goodwill or acceptance, but the rule of Good. They have very specific rules they believe in that are ironclad; again, Absolute Good is not negotiable. If Absolute Good says it is a sin to wear pants on Tuesday, then it is a goddamn sin to wear goddamn pants on goddamn Tuesday. It doesn't have to make sense, it is a law of Absolute Good, and therefore it is absolutely true. Anything that contradicts Absolute Good is necessarily wrong by virtue of the fact that it contradicts Absolute Good.

Pretty much. It was surreal when, while talking to a conservative pastor (the one that's protested the Hill Cumorah pageant, among other things), I tried explaining the concept of Gray-and-Grey Morality to him, and he was practically incapable of wrapping his head around it.

Well, with moral relativism you run into a Morton'sFork. If morality is relative, then then there's no reason not to impose your views on others.

Indeed, you run into exactly the same problem: your views are always, absolutely right relative from your perspective.

I believe in Absolute Good. And Absolute Evil. And all shades of grey.

But I don't believe in a paper. I believe in the meaning of the words that are written on that damn paper. I believe in the values written on that paper.

SOME may believe in the paper just because is the paper, but everyone who is mature enough knows the paper is the way that we materialize and preserve our values and, that way, they can be transmitted from the next generation. Through the paper they will remember who we were and what we believed on, even after we cross the valley of the shadow.

And when I mean paper, this wiki may as well be the paper.

[up]I usually refrain from posting just for this in OTC, but some times it's too egregious not to:

How did you manage to incorrectly use "of" instead of "have" while "have" was right there in the article title? Are you trying to summon the Rouge Angles of Satin?

In more depressing news, an 11-year-old boy killed his 8-year-old neighbor with a shotgun... apparently after arguing about puppies. It's exactly as stupid as it sounds, especially with the shotgun (either loaded or with ammo close by) kept in an unlocked closet.

Storing a gun (and ammo) unlocked, where your young child can easily get at it? Someone charge the father with negligent homicide, please.

Though I'm rather surprised (if gratified) to see that the boy is being charged with first degree murder. Eleven is old enough to know that if you point a gun at someone and pull the trigger, you could easily kill them. There may be extenuating circumstances (perhaps he thought it was unloaded, for example), but that can come out in trial.

[up][up]

On the eve of his second unsuccessful presidential bid, then-Gov. Perry refused to sign on to the pledge, costing Texas more than $800,000 in federal grants and drawing the ire of criminal justice advocates. Just 18 months later, Abbott not only has bucked his predecessor on the issue, but has agreed to funnel hundreds of thousands of dollars to ensure the goal is met as quickly as possible.

Makes me wonder how much money was a motivator in this.

I don't think there's extenuating circumstances. In response to a heated argument, the boy went and retrieved the weapon, then returned to the scene, pointed it at her, and pulled the trigger.

This was pretty clearly a deliberate murder.
