Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I thought he didn't even recognize the legitimacy of the government.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlaySince when did that ever stop ITL from finding a way to come to the conclusion "...so I don't have to pay!". <_<
Colorado Republican Senate candidate backs OTC birth control
Of course, there's still the little problem that he wants women to pay full price for it, but this is still a Republican talking about women without putting his foot in his mouth.

Fox News: ‘The Enemy Is Islamic,’ It’s Time to Start Profiling Muslims
I don't even have the words.
A good portion of the country has been thinking that for awhile anyway, at least these guys finally stopped beating around the bush and just flat out said it.
Let the chips fall where they may. Extra points for implying the interment camps and dropping of the atomic bombs weren't at all morally questionable.

When I saw the tab title as "Never Go..." I thought you had just rickrolled us.
Got a point though: 100% of the enemy is Muslim. They just fail logic forever by assuming the reverse to be true. There must be like a billion muslims note in the world, and what, a few dozen thousand jihadists?

"And as long as a sack of shit is not a good thing to be, chivalry will never die."The sad part is that Fox News is treated as a legit outlet by Washington.
The vast, vast majority of Muslims are not jihadists.
However, there is a pretty strong correlation between being Muslim and holding some pretty radical, ultra-conservative views. For instance, a survey done in the UK in 2007 found that about a third of British Muslims (ages 16 - 24) thought that converting to another religion should be a crime punishable by death.
...And yet they live in a country that technically has a Christian state church?
Gotta love this world.
I'm baaaaaaack
Generally the ire is focused on whose who are already Muslim and who change their religion; they don't necessarily object to Christianity as they object to people leaving Islam.
Still a dangerously backwards way of thinking, though.
Schild und Schwert der ParteiAnd, note: it's a third. Two generations ago, the proportion for the age-group would have been almost certainly in the high 90s.
Just to supply a bit of perspective.
Since when does "two generations ago" mean "parents"?

I doubt it, given the poll says their parents were far less in favor of it
I'm baaaaaaackYeah. Islam, as a religion, has areas where it's completely incompatible with Western ideals. But unless you're willing to just tear up the UDHR to enforce the UDHR, then throwing a billion people in internment camps has to be considered "not an option."
Now, if someone acts on that belief, then I believe that we should "all act according to national customs." This, of course, refers to an officer of the Raj banning the Indian practice of wife-burning in characteristically British style.
It's not inherent to Islam, it's inherent to an interpertation of Islam.
Don't forget that historically, some Christian movements have been just as brutal. The real problem is that recently, there's been a surge of extremism in Islam. If you go back to the 1960's Afghanistan was a destination for American tourists and people openly drank and went around without headscarves.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayAlmost like we sent a massive amount of funding, weaponry and trained a lot of Islamic extremists in the area...
Oh really when?Or there was a massive invasion by some world power to the north...
I'm baaaaaaackWhile jihadists may overwhelmingly be Muslims, it's mind-bogglingly ignorant to claim that they represent a significant threat to the world at large. Orders of magnitude more people die from treatable diseases, starvation, car crashes, or at the hands of their own governments than die to terrorists.
Frankly, Fox News' wealthy sponsors have been responsible for more human suffering than all the terrorists in all of history put together.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Yeah, the current surge of Islamic extremism is very, very recent. Like, a handful of decades.
It's very much a post-WWII phenomenon.
Schild und Schwert der ParteiI've got some shit games I can turn in for ice cream?
Awesome.
Oh really when?I'm amused by the comments that it's a better tradein value than Gamestop. Shame you can't do it with Steam games.

Well, if you're in Insane Troll Logic land, then, yeah. The fences are technically not part of the ground but adornments of it. And, are therefore not part of the land and therefore, not free to use and the government's to maintain. QED.
