Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I thought the "scandal" was more about her playing violent games and being childish as a result or something stupid like that..
Thirty-three Senate seats are up for election this year. Six Democrats are retiring (Daniel Akaka of Hawaii, Ben Nelson of Nebraska, Jeff Bingaman of New Mexico, Kent Conrad of North Dakota, Jim Webb of Virgina and Herb Kohl of Wisconsin).
Fifteen Democrats are running for re-election (Diane Feinstein of California, Tom Carper of Delaware, Bill Nelson of Florida, Ben Cardin of Maryland, Debbie Stabenow of Michigan, Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, Claire McCayskill of Missouri, Jon Tester of Montana, Bob Menendez of New Jersey, Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, Sherrod Brown of Ohio, Bob Casey Jr. of Pennsylvania, Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island, Maria Cantwell of Washington, and Joe Manchin of West Virginia).
Connecticut Independent Joe Lieberman is retiring (thank the lord). Vermont Independent Bernie Sanders is running for re-election.
Three incumbent Republicans are retiring (Jon Kyl of Arizona, Olympia Snowe of Maine and Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas).
Six Republicans are seeking re-election (Scott Brown of Massachusetts, Roger Wicker of Mississippi, Dean Heller of Nevada, Bob Corker of Tennessee, Orrin Hatch of Utah, John Barrasso of Wyoming). Indiana Republican Richard Lugar was defeated by Richard Mourdock in a primary.
In RWBY, every girl is Best Girl.On the Siegel bit referenced earlier [1], I can't help but think that it should be illegal to coerce employees to take political action by threatening to fire them.
Goodness knows that if a Democrat-leaning CEO tried that, Fox News would be screaming bloody murder and calling for riots and executions.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Obama wants to cut corporate tax rates.
Obama said so himself in the debate.
I went through an extensive list of all Senate seats up for grabs. Discuss, dammit!
In RWBY, every girl is Best Girl.Republican (of course): If Slavery Were So Awful, Why Didn't Jesus Or Paul Condemn It?
The ultimate rebuttal to that argument: Jesus himself was a slave.
In RWBY, every girl is Best Girl.1. It was originally legal because not having it legal would wreck the economy. Many people wanted it to be illegal though.
2. There was a lot of bitterness over it before 1961. Also how does it not starting a war until later mean it's okay? What kind of logic is that?
To who?
edit: I'll ignore the Bible bit because I believe the Bible contradicts itself several times on this thing.

@Tangent: Might as well call all education and certification for anything a regressive tax, then. Look, there's a lot of jobs that require you get certified, and also to pay for it. To take the test and take the course. Which, by the way, requires time and effort on the part of the people who are providing this education and certification service. Starting up a damn business is non trivial for most people, and everyone has to pay their starting dues. I'm not going to get my taxes done by someone who didn't go and get certified, and I don't care if they had to pay a fee to take a test to do it. Far as I'm concerned, that's the cost of wanting to start a business and prove that you are capable of doing an extremely non-trivial job that could screw me over if the tax preparer didn't do it right. (Which, incidentally, is something that happened.)
@DG: Yeah, I'm pretty sure that it is illegal to fire someone for something entirely unrelated to their competence on the job. And if someone from that company gets fired after the election and Obama wins, then they've actually got grounds to sue, I think. Not to mention that that letter sounds like a fucking threat, and that who ends up being president is out of the employee's hands because there's a bajillion fuck ton of other people voting!
Jesus Christ, this is bullying. I'd say there was a regulation against this, but I'm not so sure now and even then there's no insurance that it will be enforced.
There wasn't a fucking war because of various political compromises and the fact that they had to build up the impetus for it. FUCK, that guy does not know our country's early history at all.

Latest polls are out.
Romney leads in Colorado and Ohio. Republicans are already calling the election.

In RWBY, every girl is Best Girl.Well, the silver lining is that now we have renewed reason to tell those people who share our progressive sentiments to get off their asses and actually vote (and maybe help out with a downballot race or two, even).
Which polls have Romney leading in Ohio? That's news to me.
Going off this, if both candidates won each of their respective leaning, favored, and strongly favored states, and Romney won every single tossup state, Romney would still lose by 2 electoral votes.

According to this, the Romney bump isn't quite as big as it seems. Basically, the race is neck and neck; we're getting mixed results; we're still ahead in Ohio; I use semi-colons too much.
Hey Grizzly, why are you voting for this guy again?

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016Dammit, Romney's actually getting smart...
To be fair, just because Romney says he won't pursue abortion legislation doesn't mean he'll oppose in any way the other Republicans that are sure to try.
Of course. It's like Rick Santorum. He won't ban birth control, he just wants states to have the right to do so.
Nonono, it's more like: "Romney won't ban abortion, Congress will."
It's all loophole like.
"I don't know how I do it. I'm like the Mr. Bean of sex." -DrunkscriblerianLocal politics as usual that I don't know why anybody cares about.
Hey Grizzly, why are you voting for this guy again?
Because he's still promised to defund abortion providers by executive order and to appoint pro-life Supreme Court Justices. That said, I'm very upset with Romney for that statement, and am further confirmed in my view that he has no real moral sense on this issue and just goes with the flow.

<><He tried to not race to the center, and it started obliterating him. So he's doing the etch-a-sketch thing.
Romney signs defaced with excrement in Virginia
le sigh
Yeah, that's really not how you're supposed to show dissatisfaction with the guy...
Putting shit on campaign signs?
Well, for starters, that's unsanitary, and that's before we get into the stupidity of it.
I don't think you care about that when you're that pissed off. In fact, rational thinking is shut off by that point.
Only if the CEO wants to follow through with that. He's not gonna get in trouble for it, unfortunately.
