I am saying that when around her love interest Sayaka came off as exactly this "shy" that was the big piece of her character.

Yuki (and by extension her comrade clones come off) as Shy too Haruhi specifically thinks so. she just spends her days in the room reading books.

And in exactly no other context is Sayaka shy. In fact, she's the opposite of shy.

There is a shy girl in the show, more or less, but its not Sayaka.

... Sayaka was shy around That Guy That Showed Up About Three Times? Awkward, maybe, but not shy. And if the 'about three times' thing wasn't a big enough hint that doesn't make up enough of her characterization to matter in the first place.

I think Rei was meant to cash in on this trope. Whether or not she actually is shy, is irrelevant. She's a mysterious figure who at first Shinji can't figure out. Is shy shy? cold? just introverted? It takes time for an understanding of her true nature to form. The use of blue hair in particular is probably meant to make this trope seem like a possibility. you can call it a subversion, if you want. When Shinji first meats her and sees how reserved she is, it seems like she might follow this trope, but it turns out she doesn't.

Anyway restarting my point.... is Hair Colors mean something especially any You Gotta Have Blue Hair examples.

IMO let's break apart You Gotta Have Blue Hair by color then put what each color might mean in the description thus getting rid of this trope or then break them down by subtropes if there are enough of them. It would be better sorting of actual examples (as well as make patterns more visible.) and make potholing or wicking much easier, especially with seeing the pothole on Mouseover. (Mouseover bluehair but they are really trying to talk about green hair leads to much confusion...)

Hair Colours means something once in a blue moon but most of the time they're just there for variety.

So, does this trope even mean anything? The Rei expy stuff has its own page now.

[up]The trope's quite a bit broader than that.

[up][up][up] Eh? In my experience, especially with anime and when they chose to break the You Gotta Have Blue Hair barrier it means something in the colors they chose usually the ones I listed above. Sure there are a few that don't fit the thing but as I said "Might" in above post.

[up][up] Blue Hair meaning Intelligent, Shy, Calm, Introverted, closed off, maybe a little mysterious, maybe a reference to the Blue Oni in Red Oni, Blue Oni very much means something... and Rei expy is just related, Sailor Mercury really codified this trope 10 years before Rei. (Purple tends to get the same treatment.)

[up] In my experience with anime it's about 30% one of those. 70% we don't want to make everyone have black hair. Blue, green, and purple especially are mostly just stand-ins for black hair. Unnatural red's and yellows are stand ins for blonds and redheads they want to make more colourful and orange can be either of those. About half of pink haired characters are just supposed to be redheads. There's no deeper meaning beyond wild mass guessing and conspiracy theories.

I'll give you that very dark blues and purples often are Purple Is the New Black, but otherwise I disagree. I think there are definitely times when the color is purely an aesthetic choice, or a case of Color-Coded for Your Convenience, but I think there is a trope there, as well. They could pick any color, why that one? Purple is almost always a stand in for black, same with blue, but green especially I agree that most of the time it indicates either a connection to some elemental power they have, OR they are some kind of alien or supernatural. Probably because of Urusei Yatsura.

By green I mean dark forest green, not lime green. Bright greens are more likely to be weird. Dark greens tend to just be used as shading colours.
