A while back, Drac Monster YKTT Wed "Twenty Millenia Into The Future" (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/discussion.php?id=buqi48yrobag5jjqsutbbrmp ). We got a bunch of good examples, but it was also pointed out that the trope as described is difficult to distinguish from other tropes about the future, most especially the current The Future, Earth That Was, and A Long Time Ago, in a Galaxy Far, Far Away.... I suggested a reorganization, which got some approving mumbles from the YKTT Wers; so now I'm going to run it by here, and if y'all like it I'll do some of the legwork, although I would appreciate help.

Whadya think?

That all seems good. And 20 Minutes into the Future is simply "the near, reachable future, with cooler toys." And don't forget Next Sunday A.D., which is "Now, but in the future."

Right, I didn't call out 20 Minutes into the Future because I think it's good as is. Thanks for pointing out Next Sunday A.D..

Bump? Should I just take silence as agreement?

The Future is a supertrope, so it doesn't really make sense to change it...

Have the issues here been addressed? I can't really tell what they are.

There is now a page action crowner for this trope here. Feel free to add options as you see fit. I hope I did not misinterpret any of the suggestions given in this thread, but if I did, feel free to edit the crowner accordingly as well.

I figure that working on clarifying A Long Time Ago, in a Galaxy Far, Far Away... and making a trope in between 20 Minutes into the Future and the proposed Space Opera Future trope can probably be left for another thread, but if other people disagree, I would be fine dealing with those issues here as well.

What about "the far future" that is well below the minimum for Twenty Millennia Into The Future, like Alien Resurrection taking place in the 24th century (i.e. ~400 years from now)? Where does that go?

Why would we make The Future into an index when we already have We Will Not Use an Index in the Future? I also don't see anything wrong with The Future as written. Is there misuse? Are we just trying to change things for the sake of it?

[up] Agreed. Having it as a supertrope makes far more sense especially since there are a lot of examples that currently don't fit into any of the subtropes. We'd end up with a lot of Square Peg Round Trope misuse.

Oh wow, I was just about to come dust this off and y'all have done it for me. <3

The problem I see with the existing The Future, as written, is that it's too narrow. There are lots of stories that are set in the future but not the distant space operatic future. Hence, the suggestion that most of the current examples belong under a new subtrope and the description should get rewritten to be about the future-in-general.

Calling the crowner in favor of merging.
