General Mario Thread

Someone mentioned a Shy Guy partner and I thought it'd be interesting if such a partner could change into the different varieties of Shy Guys out there to have different attacks and abilities...

Sooo, one of the fanfiction ideas I've been tossing around (in addition to a Paper Mario -style story) is kinda a multi-fanfic Ultimate Universe Adaptation Distillation of the best of the Mario franchise and associated spin-offs. However, although I've done extensive research on other Mario games, I'm pretty sure The Thousand Year Door, Super Paper Mario, and both the Galaxy games (minus "The Perfect Run") are the only ones I've played from beginning to end. So I feel my view of the franchise as a whole is a tad one-sided.

I've got some overarching ideas and characters already in place, but I also want to get input from other Mario fans on what characters, places, and plots they'd like to see in a project like this. Also, I hope this doesn't count as a shameless plug.

If you want to know more about Mario, there's a really informative place called the Super Mario Wiki. I recommend adding Geno (because everybody likes him) and Mallow (because I like him) to it in some form, though.

One thing I'm really liking in 3D Land is the way they use the 3D effect in those pieces of old school Mario art you see in the letters you get in between worlds. I can't wait to see how Paper Mario looks in 3D.

Yeah, I've been there a lot. The writing style of most articles isn't entirely my cup of tea, but it is certainly informative.

Geno and Mallow are both characters I've wanted to work in. However, Geno seems difficult to write. It's hard to get a handle on his personality based on what I've read and heard about him, and he almost seems to upstage Mario.

In other news, HOLY EFF MARIO KART 7'S 150CC AI IS TERRIBLE. Anyway, since I unlocked him, I've taken a liking to that grumpy caterpilar Wiggler. My current favorite combination is Wiggler+Bruiser+Mushroom Wheels+Flower Glider (Because hey, flower!). I suck far more with him than with Luigi (the last few cups have been a nightmare) but I'll keep using him anyway. I've yet to beat the 150cc Special Cup and (believe it or not) Mushroom Cup, and after that I'll... Unlock Mirror Mode?

And how, exactly, is Wario heavier than freakin' DK?

Bump. Mushroom and Special Cup beaten. Daisy, Metal Mario, Mirror Mode, and the Sponge Wheels unlocked. I've tested the Sponge Wheels and they haven't disappointed. Like, at all. In fact, my new favorite combination is Wiggler+Bruiser+Sponge Wheels+Flower Glider. Sorry Mushroom Wheels.

The only problem with it is that it's reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally sluggish underwater, but oh well, nothing's perfect .

Ah yes, the Sponge wheels are pretty much designed for aerial takeoff... the catch being that it performs atrociously in every way underwater.

I thought they were supposed to be good for underwater. SO what is?

They are actually the worst for underwater. It's just logic: When the character goes underwater the wheels fill up with water, making the kart move slower and be harder to turn. And apparently the best wheels for underwater are the Wooden Wheels. Don't ask me why.

Some more Mario Kart musings:

• Whoever voiced Rosalina sounds really bored
• Again, why is Wario heavier than DK?
• No offense to you Broccoli (as you main it), but the Tiny Tug is terrible. I like it's design, but it's only good for underwater and is terrible at everything else.
• In my game, a CPU Bowser was using the fabulous Parasol Glider. It made my day.

Well, I got Mario Tennis Open yesterday. It's... okay, I guess. I'm not really having as much fun as I did with Mario Power Tennis.

Luma is in the game? The Roster seams lacking.

You can also unlock some Yoshis using QR codes. They may actually be pretty different from the Yoshi as well. Black Yoshi is All Around, and White Yoshi is Tricky. o.o

You press Up on the D-Pad and Start at the same time while on the File Select screen.

But still no Rosalina, no Toad, no Toadette, No Birdo, No Funky Kong, no Mellow, no Geno.
