Remember, non-American versions of the game tweaked a lot of the enemy stats to make fights go faster. Higher offenses, lower health. The final boss's first phase had its HP halved.

Might be why I never had an issue with it, being Australian myself. Still, I do agree with your assessment. It's not as good as the others but it's still fun.

[up][up][up][up][up] I'm looking forward to getting better at level design. I tried to do that in Little Big Planet but I didn't like how my levels turned out so I refused to publish them.

But with Super Mario Maker I like that they have the trail of Mario's path so it would be easier to design the levels.

I might make some Platform Hell levels but you have to actually complete the levels before you can publish them. I have to get used to the mechanics of Super Mario Bros., 3, World, and New again before I make levels.

My understanding of Maker is that the mechanics are essentially always a cleaned-up version of Super Mario Bros.- Most notably adding in proper full bounces from stomping enemies instead of the tiny hop- With the 3 style adding grabbing and throwing items like shells, World adding throwing upwards and the spin jump, and New Wii U removing upwards tossing and the spin jump from World but adding wall jumps and air stalls.

I sure said that!

U style actually keeps the spin jump.

Also, regarding items, classic style gets the Mystery Suit, 3 gets the Raccoon Leaf, World gets the Cape Feather, and U gets the Propellor Mushroom.

Goombas also become Galoombas in World style, which is different, and Koopas get knocked out of their shell rather than retreating into it.

Yeah, but it's the horribly nerfed spin jump from that game, and not the uber one that lets you shrug off everything.

[up][up]Ah, right, right.

I believe Yoshi is only in the later two styles and Kuribo's Shoe/Heel/Stiletto is only in the earlier two.

I meant a rideable one. tongue

I could have sworn I saw them shift the style into SMB style and the Yoshi Egg was still there, at least. But then, it'd make sense to make Yoshi exclusive to the latter two.

You know what would be nice? SNES versions of the SMB and SMB 3 artstyle, based on All-Stars.

I think Tezuka's made references to other styles being possible, as well as music composition ala Mario Paint- Indeed, Maker was originally conceived as Paint 2.

Composer would be neat, as would just including more tracks in the game and not making them tied to each level style.

On that note, more level styles would be cool too, like the forest backgrounds from SMW or the desert from SMB 3. Hopefully the game will get some updates here and there.

Heck, if it were sufficiently meaty, I'd be happy to pay a small amount for a DLC pack with some reimagined assets from the full-3D games or even bits entirely outside of Mario's series.

They changed the NSMB Spin jump back to the way it works in World, it hops off of spikes again.

Ah, so the only loss from World to New Wii U style is throwing things upwards. That's good to know.

I might end up focusing on that style, then, to be honest.

I REALLY like World's artstyle, so I'll probably stick with that.

I just wish we had more options for tile colorations and backgrounds. I want to make forest and mountain settings.

It's also a shame you can't have Goombas in World.

Or Galoombas anywhere but World, for that matter.

Seeing as there are 100 pre-made levels in the game, is Super Mario Maker part of the mainline Mario series along with the origins of its templates?

Probably not. It'll probably be more of a collection of demo levels of sorts. While designed by professionals, they might be something you won't see in an actual Mario game. They did say that the 4 levels shown off at the NWC would be put into the game.

So I'm right outside of the final boss doors and trying to decide if I'm ready. Everyone's Level 28; Baby Mario has the best trousers in the game while the others have the second best; Mario has the Big-POW Badge (boosts POW when Great is gotten on a Bros Item), Luigi has the Dynamic Badge A (greatly boosts Bros Item damage but they cost four times as much), and the babies will have either something defensive or Lucky Badges since those take effect when the big bros are still around. I have a wealth of Bros Items and just plain old Items. I think I'm more than ready but I'm contemplating going back and grinding to get the best trousers for everyone.

Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book!

You're fine. The bosses aren't that hard. They just take way too long to kill. Like there's 3 different portions of the fight where you have to whittle down 3000 HP each. It can take like 30 to 45 minutes to take them all down. I'm not exaggerating.

So I've been replaying All-Stars and World to refresh my memories on the levels and see if I can find inspiration for my levels in Maker. I have to say, there are levels that, for their time, showed some neat gimmicks and concepts. For example, the whale geysers in SMB2, the Goomba Shoe in SMB3 and the countdown platforms in World. It makes you wonder what they could have done with the latter had it not been rushed during production.

I think I already have something in mind for a castle level in Maker, but I haven't decided yet the style (it's between World and NSMBU). It will depend on which physics will help me implement better the specific ideas I'm planning for this level. smile

The wall jumps and functional World-style Spin Jump are kinda pushing me towards New Wii U for Maker, especially since the Propellor Mushroom doesn't quite break the platforming apart the way the Super Leaf and especially the Cape Feather do, even if I'm not the biggest fan of the New SMB art direction.

There are going to be SO many levels that are going to have the Kuribo's shoe.
