I've been a deist ever since I discovered what deism was. The idea that through reason the existence of God could be established, combined with the idea that he or she or it does not interfere with his or her or its creation was in me for more than half of my life, so upon discovery of deism I was an instant convert. So am I alone or what?

I am also a Deist, though I grew up Catholic and that still really influences my ethics and especially my politics. I basically split with Christianity when I decided I couldn't reconcile the idea of an all-powerful, all-knowing, all-good god with all the suffering in the world.

[up][up] Awesome.

[up] Awesome and interesting, I like to form theories about the reasons why such suffering exists with a god existing as well.

I'm a Deist and it gets really tiring having to argue with zealots on both sides.

I consider myself sort of a deist, an agnostic one. I believe in Sufficiently Advanced Aliens and think it's possible one created our universe.

I am not a deist, but my sister is. Don't think she browses the fora, though.

@Linhasxoc That idea of good god vs. bad world is a problem for me, too. Sometimes I think I have it figured out, but never for very long.

A bit of a pantheist, a bit of a deist, a bit of agnostic, a bit of an existential pessimist.

I initially identified as a Lutheran until age fifteen, when I learned of the wide variety of religious beliefs around the world and began to identify as agnostic as a result, and because God never came to me the way He apparently did for my parents and sister (my sister, while still identifying as Christian, isn't as strong as my parents due to going to a New Orleans youth church group in her teens and witnessing other Christian teens her age taking narcissistic pride in homophobia, shattering her faith as a result). Eventually, I came to identify as a deist, which seems to be the perfect balance of logic and open-mindedness. My parents are still disappointed that I don't believe the exact same way as them, because despite being mostly tolerant of other beliefs, it's difficult for them to reconcile their own son believing something vastly different from what they believe. They have even said that they would prefer I convert to Judaism or Islam, so long as I believe in one God, no more, no less, and believe that He does care enough to make miracles happen every once in a while, so I have to at least pretend to pray at dinner just to keep them from whining. Somehow, I'm more bothered by prideful atheism than evangelical Christianity. My best friend at this point in my life is a pretty strong Christian, though not to the point where she would do anything like wearing a crucifix, and she is one of the most open-minded and accepting people I know. A good phrase I once heard is "God prefers kind atheists over hateful Christians." Too bad my parents believe that you can't be both kind and an atheist or anything similar.

It can't be helped.
