[up] Not until Konami decides that they do want to continue making Metal Gear games after all. The franchise is Kojima's rightful property, not Konami's, no matter what the stupid legal documents that they forced him to sign in return for their funding his game projects say.

Eh... I'm more of a Metal Gear fan, I'm kind of down on Kojima at the moment, the more time passes the more disappointed I get at what happened in MGSV's story department.

I kind of want a new Kojima-less Metal Gear just to see what it would end up as.

I am a fan of Metal Gear Solid. Just that one. Where the series went from there uptil and including 5, I didn't care for. I don't mean the themes, I mean the execution. The constant intentional trolling. I know most fans don't care and indeed liked the trolling, but I was never one of them.

I do not want either Konami or Kojima to have the IP. The former for obvious reasons given the direction of the company, the latter because he stopped caring about it a long time ago.

I'd rather a studio give it the proper respect it needs, both in message and execution. A Naughty Dog approach (not saying ND should take a whack at it, just saying a similar kind of respect should be given, by whatever studio should be worthy).

Start with a clean slate, with the first two games Cerebus'd and perhaps expanded upon as triple A titles in and of themselves. Then Solid. Make it a stand alone trilogy. If it does well, then continue Snake's adventures without making EVERYTHING connected to everything else as one uber conspiracy. Tell the story of Big Boss in MGS 3 without the Boss or the Patriots or Ocelot. Just make an operation gone wrong. Then go forward with Peacewalker without shoehorning in Miller and so on. Then 5, except make 5 about the creation of the actual base of Outer Heaven, not merely the company. It was a great disappointment to me that they had Snake go to the Angola-Zaire border and not explicitly set up the location of Outer Heaven there. Make Big Boss's voice different from Snake's from the get go (do not even refer to him as Snake, give him a different codename all together).

I've begun going a bit too far indepth of what I want. I'll stop but I won't delete what I wrote.

Safe to say, I give no shits about the currently existing canon.

[up]You're not alone in some of those wishes, especially in regards towards MGSV. Yet the die-hard fans are making all kinds of justifications for why the game answers so few questions, along with how Kojima "intended" it to end that way. The Never Be Game Over thread on Reddit takes the cake for that one.

...Well, actually he did. Yep, even the totally unsatisfying end for the Liquid/Eli stealing Sahelanthropus part. Apparently Kojima-san thought that would make for a good example of "Phantom Pain". I digress with him completely there, it's nothing but a disappointment and leaves a really nasty hole which seriously should've been filled with a "Kingdom of the Flies" DLC or something.

Though I wonder why you think the series would be better without The Boss. She was almost universally well-received and held a very important role in the mythos, so why would you believe removing her would benefit?

I'm fine with the current existing canon, but I can understand why others wouldn't be.

But I'd also like a game ABOUT the Boss. Have her dealing with her own weirdness. Or hell maybe another Revengeance game.

I have a lot of criticisms I can make towards Kojima, but I feel like the main reason the games were interesting were his ideas, the ridiculous attention to detail, the fourth wall breakery/meta stuff, etc. And yes that includes the "trolling", Playing The Player is one of my favorite tropes and MGS 2 was all the better for it.

In that sense I don't really want another studio or group of people making more MGS games because I see them as much more liable to play the whole action hero thing straight and thusly would be boring.

@Sgt Ricko - I do not mind the Boss herself. Well acted and well written she was. But she's so heavily tied into the Patriots storyline (and given the amount of realism they get into, her being a pregnant special forces badass in the 1940s always took me out of the story) I dunno how to put her in without it. Honestly I'd rather SHE take Millers place in the peacewalker and 5 timelines.

[up]There is a vast chasm between Playing The Player and boring action hero. Don't need scare quotes on the trolling either.

[up] Yeah it would be fair to call it trolling without the scare quotes.

I do agree that there is a big spectrum between the two, but again, Playing The Player is one of my favorite things so I don't see the removal of it as an improvement in the slightest, and I still stand by my statement that they'd be liable (see: not guaranteed, but a good chance of) to be less interesting than the current series, even with its flaws. And for that reason, the idea of a reboot really has no appeal for me at all.

I like The Boss and I liked when the reason Big Boss turned his back to the US was them disposing of her as garbage.

That could have been it, she didn't need to be the entire raison d'etre of the series.

But then after that they made every major antagonist's motivation basically "well, I know what the Boss actually wanted", and then fucked up with Big Boss's own motivation with that whole "she betrayed me" crap in Peace Walker and I got tired of all of it.

Yeah. I can understand people doing that for Big Boss, given how the Outer Heaven insurrection was supposed to be a seminal moment in history for that verse, but not with Boss. On a similar note, the shoehorning of Major Zero as the REAL Big Bad....

[up][up]I don't mind the trope per se...but used sparingly. With the current series, you basically can't care about anything, for love or hate, because it gets retconned into something lame no matter what it is.

Personally, I liked what MGS 4 did with the Patriots and Big Boss's crew from MGS 3. MGS 3 is basically the origin story for the villain, but with Big Boss having been dead since the original Metal Gear, it wasn't that impactful. For the Solid games, he's basically a Posthumous Character; Ocelot has a stronger claim to the role of "Main Villain" than he does, because he doesn't spend half the franchise as a corpse.

That MGS 3 was secretly also an origin story for the Patriot system was a fun surprise that gave the game more direct impact on the franchise as a whole.

MGS 4 revealing that Big Boss has been secretly alive all this time, on the other hand, was completely unnecessary and confusing. And then Peace Walker and the two MGSV games came along, and now he's practically the Deuteragonist. This is what happens when you don't stop making new entries after the finale.

Honestly I enjoyed Peace Walker and V more on their own merits than their involvement in the story as a whole. I personally loved the interactions between Ocelot, Venom and Kaz. The Cassette tapes are also top notch.

Granted I do take a bit of issue with ground zeroes, I understand that Kojima loves his "War Is Hell" plotlines but dear lord it's grimdark to an extreme.

Kojima's approach to storytelling is like taking a shotgun to a target range- He lands all over the place but there's more than a few bullseyes.

I like Kojima because I felt his work on making Big Boss a interesting character was quite well done, Big Boss was someone who fell from grace and we got to see how he grew to think that nuclear war was a good idea.

And we probably should make a Kojipro thread eventually, for when he finally makes that game with Sony.

Am I the only one who liked Twin Snakes better than the Original MGS 1? Sure, a lot of the new cutscenes were stupid, but I still found it fun, the graphics aged much better than the original PS 1 game, I liked that you can do a actual no-kill run of the game due to the addition of the M9 Tranq and PSG-1 T as opposed to MGS 1 where you were forced to kill enemies at points, the first-person aiming helped a lot at points, while the dog tags didn't unlock anything I still found it satisfying to collect them all, and Psycho Mantis' boss theme was great.

I'm rather fond of how badass Snake was in Twin Snakes.

The Vulcan Raven fight, Gray Fox, the ridiculous, batshit crazy things he could do. Definitely made him seem more like a super soldier than simply having the ability to punch twice and kick, or see/sense more than 90 degrees.

I'm fond of most of the changes in Twin Snakes- Though I disagree with a fair few of the music changes.

I don't get people who complain about it making the game ridiculous- The original was just as absurd, just not as overt about it.

I sure said that!
