So do you guys know when and why exactly homophobia stopped becoming acceptable? It seems like it was some time in the early tens or late 2000s, because that's when you started seeing a lot of celebrities coming out and lgbt people getting more representation in the media, but I'm not sure I can pinpoint an exact event that may have preceded this. Was it maybe Proposition 8?

@Treble: the DSM thing? I think it's intentionally vague so individual psychs can use their own systems of diagnosis. Which is fucked up, but yeah. I don't know. I'm not a psych.

...Maybe the reason I keep doing crap like that is out of some stupid need for self gratification.

I am also aware that a lot of stuff in the DSM in general is a load of crap.

@Treble I think people who go "oh just be yourself and dont let other people tell you otherwise" is talking out their arse. It's really fucking hard when you're out to no one and people keep calling you a gender that you're not. Because if everyone was accepting and acknowledging you wouldn't give a shit. So, yeah, of course you need self gratification.

It's a called "Gender Euphoria", according to one of my old psychologists. That awesome feeling you get when people acknowledge your gender.

@Xopher: It isn't like just like you can pinpoint a date that happened, and that's when homophobia stopped being acceptable. Like the rest of history, it was more of a gradual thing. Hence why you still have racists and homophobes to this day with little consequence. All throughout history, homosexuality had varying levels of acceptableness.

I can't give you a year, or even a set of years, that homosexuality started becoming more acceptable. I'd need to describe in each set of years, like the free-love movement in the 70s being a huge step for acceptability, or the 90s starting to have a lot of characters that were acceptably gay (for example, Ross's lesbian ex-wife). Even in the very early 1900s there were movements for homosexuals becoming more acceptable. However, trying to discuss all of homosexual history in even just the past century would take up entire essays or even books.

So there really isn't a time when the world's view on homosexuality did a flip. It was a very gradual thing, with movements supporting it along the way.

Maybe I should just stop coming here if all I'm going to do is whine about how much I hate myself.

Also, found the xkcd comic from a few years ago analyzing gay marriage acceptance. now the value is at 100% if the chart were remade, huzzah! (So 2011 would be the date of majority approval, Xopher!)

If you read my post i mention that there are still homophobes to this day with no consequence.

That said, it's becoming like racism where it is less and less acceptable.

If you look at that xkcd chart there seems to have been a huge spike in the last decade, and thats what I was asking about

The big spike is marriage equality rulings. More and more states were legalizing it. The other blue line (acceptance) is more gradual. Starting around the 60s, some people began to accept it, then the AIDS epidemic hit, and homophobia shot right back up to where it was before, except now gay people were out in the public eye. Since then, its slowly become more acceptable, and us learning more about hiv and aids has helped with that.
