I'm very worried as to how they'll cut a six hour miniseries (which I thought was very tightly written and even that sacrificed Roach) into a two or three hour production. I'm guessing Riki's time in Shanghai will be the victim, but damn, that is a very involved and complex part of the book. I also do not think that Oldman and Firth are old enough to play Smiley and Haydon convincingly. They made their careers in WWII and this takes place around the 1980s? Forty plus years in the Circus. Oldman might be able to pull it off but no way can Firth play at 60+. Humph.

ALSO, Mark Strong plays Prideaux. Prideaux was with Haydon at Oxbridge in the 30s. What.

They cut Traffic from six hours to two and a half and it worked just fine.

Just looked at IMDB and it seems Roach is out. Heh, seems as if they are trying to keep from spoiling who Control is, BUT WHO IS CONTROL? Will Patrick Stewart replay Karla? Do you think this is a testing ground for more le Carre films? Do you think they will remake The Spy who Came in....*gets shot by Czech army*

Stars: Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman and Colin Firth

Huh. Tom Hardy's like the new Ryan Reynolds.

Hardy plays Riki so it's not that big a leap. I suppose an Americanization would have had Ryan Reynolds or Di Caprio as Riki. Shocked Mc Avoy is not in it.

Oh, I didn't know that. Was just surprised that Hardy's turning up in everything nowadays.

Do we have an article on this thing? Tinker Tailer Soldier Spy Eh, either we don't or it's a ptitle.

We do have some info on it, but it's rolled under the John le Carre article.

Which links out to where it's really under, the Quest for Karla article.

The difference between Hardy and Reynolds is that Hardy has talent.

I have a feeling that they are going to take out certain aspects out of the story to make it work for the time of the film.

ok I'm expecting good things from this, the source material is a classic, the cast are uniformly excellent and the director of Let The Right One In is doing it so it could be great

It's just that Roach provided such an emotional core to the story and one which nicely forshadowed Magnus Pym's childhood in A Perfect Spy. It would be cool to have an adaptation of that as well.

Ask the BBC and Working Title. They came up with the idea for a remake.

It's a UK production. Universal only picked up the American rights after the film finished filming.

Similar to the Edge of Darkness remake. It was a co-production of the BBC and Mel Gibson's Icon (an Australian/US company) with Warner Bros. picking it up after it was completed.

In fairness to Colin Firth, Ian Richardson was 46 when he played Bill Haydon in the television series, and Firth is 51 now. The book, and apparently the film, are set in 1974. For Haydon to be at Oxford in 1938 (per the novel), he would have been born around 1920 or so, putting him in his early-to-mid 50s during the novel.

As far as Gary Oldman goes, there have been a couple of images that have popped up on the net of him in makeup, and he looks about right. As far as his performance goes, we'll have to see.

I have to confess that, while he was very, very good, Alec Guinness was not my favorite George Smiley. I actually preferred Denholm Elliott.

I read the book and absolutely loved it. Here's hoping they'll do it justice. (Also, wondering: are they just adapting Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy? Or are they also including The Honourable Schoolboy and Smiley's People?)
