I haven't read it, but this Onion article is relevant: http://www.theonion.com/articles/new-parenting-book-sparks-outrage,18858/
https://www.facebook.com/emileunmedicatedanduncutThe funny thing is, actual and reputable news sites followed this pattern:
1. Read excerpt on back of book (Meant to show Chua's mindset at the /beginning/) 2. Publish a scathing review about how the book hates children. 3. ??? 4. Readers!
Really. It's like reading,, say, The Scarlet Letter halfway through, and then calling Hester Prynne a dirty slut.
I am become Death, Destroyer of Miniputts.I saw her interview on the Colbert Report actually. It's kinda funny how people managed to miss the point that the book was more autobiographical than a how-to book, and that she eventually realized that that style of parenting made everybody unhappy.
There was a long thread about that in On-Topic Conversations, and here's a linky. It's quite dead now, by the way. More specifically, it was about an article that was an excerpt from the book.
Warm hugs and morally questionable advice given here. Prosey BitchfestI think the title should be "The Shrill Warcry of the Utter Bitch" but that's just me.
You should probably read the book, then.
You can't even write racist abuse in excrement on somebody's car without the politically correct brigade jumping down your throat!
I'm... actually mildly surprised that I couldn't find a topic for this here.
Written by Amy Chua, Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother concerns a woman's struggle with her husband and children over her brand of "Chinese parenting", which involves an absolutely uncompromising stance, an adversarial role towards one's child, and a constant drive to want to see your child succeed. Oh, and no fun. Ever.
Well, except for the dozens of international vacations that are mentioned in the margins.
But still, it's an odd, interesting story.
Erp. Has anyone else read it?
