Turn-based tactical shooter, page pending. The site is here.

They're following a Minecraft-type development cycle, so the beta is open to all buyers.

Oh, and there's multiplayer.

Oh my goodness. I don't remember when a newly acquired game would have felt this awesome. I kinda hope now I would have purchased the version that comes with the soundtrack. Flipping through the songs in You Tube didn't quite catch the catchiness of some of the songs.

I have a few complaints: the technical issues prevent the game from working on my pal's computer, so so far only one of the two copies I bought have been functional. Weirdly works flawlessly on my rig. It would seem the developers are working their asses off to fix the issues, so I'm expecting them to be fixed eventually.

Then there is the default 8 turn time limit on the extermination mode, which I don't like at all. It's so anticlimatic when an epic, exciting match ends because time runs out. As far as I understand, it's in place to prevent scenarios where a losing player with a single shotgun guy left just fortifies a small room and causes the situation to lock up. In my opinion that's not worth the disappointment an even match ending because of the time limit brings.

And the bazooka men. Most of the time they ruin the game for me. Sometimes they work out nicely, but most of the time they seem to reduce the game into "destroy all cover and then who pulls the trigger faster wins". Maybe I just don't know how to deal with them and have to get better at the game.

Don't take me wrong, though, the game is still brilliant. It's a great feeling when an opponent plays their turn exactly like I anticipated and runs their dudes straight into my ambush. Feels like being in my opponent's head.

Bazooka men... destroy all cover...

... Then that needs fixed, I think. The explosives users need to have a relatively small limit on their ammunition count, for a number of reasons. They should have a sidearm for engaging foes at close range (or just at "no time for splodey" range).

For anyone interested, I'm streaming the game live here in a few minutes:

http://www.justin.tv/sir_ad

That might or might not give a picture of how the game plays for those who are not fully familiar with it yet.

Edit: That was a short lived stream, I got some business to do. It'll be back on later tonight in an hour or maybe two and every now and then after today. If this thread generates interest I might inform here when I'm streaming, otherwise I'll let the thread sink.

Here is my experience with this game so far: I play the tutorial. By the time I'm done, feel like I understand how it all works. Great! That's more than I can say for a lot of games. Then I start the campaign and I'm treated to some baffling and incomprehensible storytelling. I divine that it might be some kind of wanky cyberpunk nonsense, but otherwise find it completely inscrutable. I start the first mission and make a few moves, then end the turn. Half of my team dies, and I have no idea why. I think to myself: "Okay, let's try that again" and restart the mission. I find that the map is in fact procedurally generated and everything is in a different place. I think to myself: "I'm not smart enough to play this game" and exit the program, uncertain whether or not I'll ever start it up again.

Tempted by this game again. Any other testaments from those who've played it? The music is amazing.

By the way, daily deal on Steam dropped the price on the soundtrack today.

From my experience in the campaign, I'm either a moron or the Computer Is a Cheating Bastard and manages to devise a plan to counter all my moves despite the fact that it should have no clue what it is I'm doing. The fact that I'm tired might be influencing things a bit, though.

Edit: Yeah, the computer cheats and reacts according to your orders, so you've got to account for damn near anything and everything. It forces you to plan things out well, but it's also frustrating as hell when the enemy pulls off psychic bullshit all the time. It would be much more tolerable if it randomly exploited your tactical errors rather than all the damn time.

I really like this game so far. We should get together for Troper Matches. If we get enough people we could try a Troper Tournament.

Well, my opinion of this game is much higher now that I got through the 3rd mission flawlessly. No casualties whatsoever, just dead enemies. Unfortunately, the game crashed when I tried to upload it to Youtube to show off. How unfortunate.

Edit: And it turns out there's no way to review singleplayer missions you've completed (that I know of, at least), just to replay the same map. That's rather annoying.

I'm loving this game. The singleplayer I haven't even touched yet, I'm focused on multiplayer, and I'm loving it. Even when I lose, I learn by watching the turn-by-turn replay/the videos I upload to my youtube account, and when I win, or when a ambush comes together perfectly, I'm left with a very warm and fuzzy feeling. There aren't many games like this at all, so this one is a gem.

I've found that I work best with a strong defensive position or when besieging an enemy. I also tend to be good at moving my guys from cover to cover and ducking after moving to cover to break enemy's line of sight to even the odds next turn. I'm horrible with predicting and dealing with ambushes, though, and I often overlook alternate methods of attack when units on both sides are scattered or mixed together. In essence, I appear to fight like an Imperial Fist.

Then there's this:

UK 1. According to the news they all will fuse into UK 1 later anyway, so might as well change over now!

I'd be willing to take you on. What's your name?

I like the game alright, even moreso after the graphical update, but I'm not terribly good at it, probably for many of the same reasons I was pants at Rainbow Six. Anyone played the football game version, Frozen Cortex?

YoKab Since: Jan, 2015

Cortex was pretty fun, but due to the developers not promoting the game as it closer to release during its Early Access period, people forgot about it and the multiplayer scene died after the full release. Of course, due to that the game sold poorly after full release compared to Synapse.

As dor the upcoming Synapse 2, nervous_testpilot seems to be back for the soundtrack, making it worth be buy for that alone.
