This thread exists to discuss British politics.
Political issues related to Northern Ireland and the Crown Dependencies (the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man) are also considered on-topic here if there's no more appropriate OTC thread for them.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
As with other OTC threads, off-topic posts may be thumped or edited by the moderators.
- There is a dedicated thread to discuss LGBTQ+ rights in the United Kingdom. That doesn't mean it's always off-topic here, but unless something's directly linked to political events, that's probably a better thread for it.
- There's also a separate thread to talk about your favourite British Prime Ministers.
Recent political stuff:
- The vote to see if Britain should adopt Alternative Voting has failed.
- Lib Dems lose lots of councils and councillors, whilst Labour make the majority of the gains in England.
- The Scottish National Party do really well in the elections.

So when do the Conservatives change their name to Norsefire?
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Thing is, isn't this sort of big-government meddling against their "small government independence" rhetoric?
"Yup. That tasted purple."It looks like Security (but not Defence) has a higher priority then Small Government.
They may not have a choice now — and I bet English Devolution is becoming popular amongst Conservative voters.

Keep Rolling OnBesides, haven't the tories been the ones consistently against devolved powers, because it usually belongs devolving to areas that don't vote Tory?
Can we vet the Government for extremism before any minister opens their mouths or, better yet, before any of their neurons start (mis)firing?
If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading. How likely do you guys think Parliament will renew TRIDENT?
Total bastard, and really puts the lie to the notion that it was the SNP playing dirty in the election campaign.
The Tories are against devolved England or English Votes for English Issues because then they couldn't scare the voters with the West Lothian Question.
Eh, everyone played dirty. They always do. My friends and family have some horror stories to tell about the behaviour of SNP door-to-door campaigners whose behaviour and message were completely different to what Sturgeon was saying. It didn't stop them voting SNP, but it certainly made them want to clean house.
Edited to add: Not that I want to be seen defending Carmichael. Not even close. I'm just saying that there's rotten eggs everywhere. Politics attracts them, regardless of party.

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.X4 I'm 3 minutes in and it's completely missed the point of nuclear weapons "how does it benefit you to respond in kind", it doesn't, that's not what nuclear weapons are for. Nuclear weapons are not for nuking people, they are political and psychological weapons, not military ones.
And Trident is getting renewed, The Tories are goign to vote for it and so are Labour, it's going strait though unless we play dirty party politics with foreign policy again (which while possible seems unlikely considering it's something this big).

Keep Rolling OnI hate to be That Guy, but that's not technically true; tactical nuclear weapons exist for a reason, after all.
Albeit any in depth discussion on that particular topic should either be taken to the military thread, or if you wish you may PM me for specifics.
Locking you up on radar since '09This article is interesting. NI is such a holdout. Our own little cute bible belt.
Fucking hillbillies.
Schild und Schwert der ParteiI mean, it's crazy. Like, how the hell can that whole region be so ass-backwards?
I dunno, asked Roscommon/South Leitrim.

I think the same thing when I visit...nah, don't want to kill the joke.
If you want, its because NI has two nations within it, both of which think their identity is threatened, so they've adopted strong political identities to deal with that. It so happens that the majority of those people chose to adopt a staunch Protestantism to keep their Britishness "secure". Rather like the Rhodesians, and like the Rhodesians, it's led to the real British viewing them as backwards and bigoted.
Hopefully it'll be legalized judicially. Either that or London gives them their marching orders, but don't hold your breath with this administration.

Schild und Schwert der ParteiSinn Féin is apparently leading the charge for legalized gay marriage up there.
...we really can't say anything, they might be the next government down here. And that's if we're lucky.
So it's south for marriage and north for abortions?
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranPretty much.
Interestingly enough, it was a referendum that introduced the ban on abortions over here.
Get into them Nicola.
