    Original OP
(I saw Allan mention the lack of one so I thought I'd make one.)

Recent political stuff:

  • The vote to see if Britain should adopt Alternative Voting has failed.
  • Lib Dems lose lots of councils and councillors, whilst Labour make the majority of the gains in England.
  • The Scottish National Party do really well in the elections.

Either way, devolution/autonomy is needed in this day and age.

I really don't think things are going to get that ugly just because the outcome is finally known. If people were willing to go that far at all, then I honestly think they would have done so by now, especially the side that were always facing the uphill struggle.

A narrow Yes victory would have been a different matter, could certainly have seen the more hardline Orange Order nobheads kicking up a lot of ugly crap at any change in the status quo.

[up][up]Sledge: different political cultures... Most in these part wouldn't stand for the way you'd paint that picture. Just drop it. Please.

When/if we go about a fully devolved Union with representation for all (including England), we'll do it our own way, thank you. American-style federalisation? Get real... there are so many flaws with that.

Think about it this way. If Cameron doesn't grant more autonomy to Scotland, he will lose the election. Not that Labour is any better. tongue

Hahahno. The Tories have one seat exactly in Scotland. Not exactly a lot of leverage.

Promise betrayal can hurt you with more than just the people you betrayed. Look at Clegg, he only actually betrayed students, but it's more than just students who've gone "fuck you you two-faced basterd".

And MI 5 should be on high alert in Scotland in general at he moment, there's not just the risk of revenge attacks by (the small minority of violent) Yes people but the likes of the Orange Order could decide to go on of some kind of victory parade that involves burning shit.

Clegg went back on a promise and he will almost certainly get pwned in the election. Cameron will face the se fate of he reneges on this promise.

So who replaces Salmond? Gordon Brown?

Gordon Brown is still MP in Westminster and his party not the majority party in the Scottish Legislature. It will be a SNP person.

Ahh, right.

In other news, Cameron pledged more powers to each of the four countries. Expanded taxing, spending, and welfare power - among others - to Scotland will have legislation drafted by January.

Farage is already insisting the Scots don't deserve more though, so he'll have a fight on his hands.

Best case scenario for me - we get the powers at the expense of Cameron's career.

I doubt Farage can do that much about it anyway. Unless it gets brought up at the EU for some reason.

He can drive the Tory backbenchers whose voters are close to Farage's party against Call Me Dave.

Because several Tory backbenchers don't like that plan.

The fight over what, if any, powers to give, and to whom could easily be a career destroying one. Devolution in England, more powers in Wales, the massive maelstrom that is Northern Ireland...this is complicated stuff, and all the parties that allied over backing no independence for Scotland are now singing from hymn sheets that bear no resemblance whatsoever to each other.

Any party could gain from this, any could lose. And with a deadline to meet in January and an election to plan for May, things are going to be very tense. The election is horrifically timed from that perspective as it gives the parties almost no time to sort things out. And with voter backlash inevitable at the election anyway even without Yes supporting Scots potentiall regrouping and annihilating their enemies at the polls...

As we're talking English devolution I decided to try and break England up into regions. You simply can't balance them population wise so after a while I gave up. Here's what I ended up with.

Realm of York (pop: 8,663,200): Yorkshire (pop: 5,234,700), Northumberland (pop: 316,300), Tyne and Wear (pop: 1,104,100), Durham (pop: 816,300), Stockton-on-Tees (pop: 191,800)

Realm of Lancashire-Manchester (pop: 7,049,000): Lancashire (pop: 1,461,400), Cumbria (pop: 499,800), Greater Manchester (2,685,400), Merseyside (pop: 1,380,800), Cheshire (pop: 1,021,600)

Realm of Mercia (pop: 12,624,100): Lincolnshire (pop: 1,042,000), Nottinghamshire (pop: 1,090,600), Derbyshire (pop 1,019,500), Shropshire (pop: 473,900), Staffordshire (pop: 1,098,300), West Midlands (pop: 2,739,800), Warwickshire (pop: 546,500), Leicestershire (pop: 980,800), Rutland (pop: 37,600), Northamptonshire (pop: 693,900), Buckinghamshire (pop: 756,600), Oxfordshire (pop: 654,800), Gloucestershire (pop: 1,289,800),

Realm of Wessex (pop: 4,011,300): Somerset (pop: 910,200), Wiltshire (pop: 684,000), Dorset (pop: 745,400), Devon (pop: 1,135,700), Cornwall (pop: 536,000)

Realm of Anglia (pop: 4,926,000): Cambridgeshire (pop: 806,700), Norfolk (pop: 859,400), Suffolk (pop: 730,100), Essex (pop: 1,729,200), Hertfordshire (pop: 183,600), Bedfordshire (pop: 617,000)

Realm of Home Counties (pop: 15,438,500): Berkshire (pop: 863,800), Greater London (pop: 8,196,700), Kent (pop: 1,731,400), Sussex (pop: 1,609,100), Surrey (pop: 1,135,500), Hampshire (pop: 1,902,000)

Now the Realms of York and Lancashire-Manchester could maybe be combined into a "Real of the North", they're the size they are as I didn't want to lump the entire North together.

For comparison Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have populations of 3,063,456, 5,295,00, and 1,810,863 respectively.

Many counties actually consist of multiple small counties and Unitary Authorities, I have the long form version with ever local authority in England if you want it, but it's pretty long.

So the Isle of Wight got added to Hampshire, the same way the multiple parts of Yorkshire all got put back together.
