Problem is the only guys are know are WAY underleveled, they wouldn't stand a chance against the Duke. You guys are basically the strongest players I know and since the server is down that's no longer an option.

Don't give up yet. You can kite Duke Fishface to death. Don't try doing it on natural terrain unless you're godly at grappling things to reset your flight timer. Instead, build a long flat road of asphalt from one of the oceans. Some 2000 blocks should do for most cases, but you can get away with less if you can handle a hoverboard or are absolutely loaded on defense like some of you are. Lastly, arm yourself with something you can fire-and-forget; Terra Blade works, but I first killed the Duke with a Tactical Shotgun and Chlorophyte Bullets.

With all of that in place, fish for the Duke and when he bites, RRRRRRUUUUUUNNNNNN.

Alternatively, use Gravitation potions to avoid his charge. Your terminal velocity should be faster than his charges.

Just make sure that gravity is normal when his homing typhoon hits you, as the resulting Cthulhunado grows upwards. It'll hit you for 200 (before reduction) damage if you were going anti-gravity.

Alright, sounds good. I do have the grenade launcher, rocket launcher, and that Thorns wand that shoots out mini-eater of worlds on every hit, so I guess that in combination with the gravitation potion will have to do.

Are there any monsters that destroy items when they hit you? I'm starting to lose things and I have no idea how.

I have no idea.

In my new incarnation I got my hands on a strong spear from a chest and have been poking things to death. Including running into pink fleshy ground and finding scary creatures called Face Monsters. I've killed four and gotten two vertebrae. Anyone know what I've run into?

[up][up]Make sure you don't use Shift+Left Click when transferring items from your inventory into a chest. This worked in Minecraft and Starbound, in Terraria it sends your item into your trash.

[up]That's the Crimson, a lovely alternative to the Corruption. Features flesh, blood, gore, misplaced organs, and Face Monsters and stuff.

Having the Crimson means you won't be seeing any Corruption, by the way. The Crimson is generally harder but it has sweet loot, notably the key to the Vampire Knives chest.

I shall remember that, and get my ass kicked trying for it. Luckily, I got a spear in my first chest, so I'm able to keep bad things at bay.

So I'm doing that thing that smart players do: Building a fucking CASTLE near the Crimson border. It's fun. Between waves of building I'm facing waves of Crimson critters. Face Monsters, Crimeras, Bloodcrawlers. All of them. And I've put up a moat to keep them at bay. (Well, it was an accident. There was some stone near the entrance, and you know what happens when you mine it.) So I shouldn't have a problem forming that as my forward base now. I've got the five-level gate houses up on either side, now I have to work on the internals and get a population going. This should get more fun when it's up and running and I can use it to push into the Crimson proper.

Remember to stretch the foundations so you can quarantine against Hardmode biome spreading.

Oh crap. Thanks, I'll remember to do that. Can I just use stone/wood or do I need to find something special like the flowers that ward off Corruption?

Sunflowers stop the spread of Corruption or Crimson before Hardmode.

Use wood or stone brick (bake with Furnace), raw stone (and sand) can be Corrupted by biome spread. Actually any brick/stucco-type material works fine, and you can also use Clay, Snow (but not Ice), and stuff like that (Mud/Jungle can be Corrupted, but not Hallowed).

Can do. Thanks for the tips.

So far the castle consists of two five-story towers with doors on ground level, and a two-story long-house with four houses and an anteroom on the ground floor and a single-room attic that holds my crafting center. Which consists of a workbench, a furnace, and an anvil so far. I've got my guide and the merchant safely housed there so far. No one else has turned up yet.

Oh, and each level of the towers has a two-tile hole in the outer wall so I can pester any incoming nasties. I've barely used that feature yet, but it's a possibility. For now I've just been poking the fliers and letting the Face Monsters inside the towers so I can stab them in the, well, faces.

[up][up]IIRC Sunflowers don't do jack against Crimson. Crimson uproots them, even before hardmode.

[up]You might want to move the housing much higher because the Crimson will spread below your house in hardmode. The houses below would get corrupted easily.

The latest build added so much I am stalled at how to even do things anymore. Why are there so many new ores? Tin...Tungsten...Lead...

How long ago was your last playthrough? Those things have been there for a while now. I've never played a release that didn't have those three ores.

Each of the new ores is identical to one of the old ones in all but appearance. Lead is interchangeable with iron, for instance. You won't find both equivalent types of ore in the same world.

Hell, last time I played it must have been months, maybe even a year. I have not touched that in a looooooooooooooooooooooooong while, and I restarted it for funsies to find all this new lead thing. I don't even remember how to do anything, hah.

I can't even get people to go live in the houses I make. I think I am missing windows on them or something. Or maybe they are racist.

I am going to go with racist.

In the inventory menu, there's a button for housing that lets you see what counts as valid housing. You can use that to check what you're building. Also, there's a minimum size for housing, so if you already have it fully walled, with a table, door, chair, and light source, take down one of the walls and expand.

Oh. It must be the size, then. Damn people are demanding. I dont even get to tax them and they get so demanding to live in my free accomodations.

Pfft, it's not like they run up and demand you give them housing. Personally I like finding or making plateaus and building castles on them so everyone's safe. Once you get folks inside, you can seal up the wall and put a door somewhere out of their reach so you can still get in there.

I am considering making an underwater hold, because of the way water works there. That oughta keep them safe, right?

And it is possible?

It's possible, you'll have to build the outer walls and then drain the inside. I don't know how you'd get the extra water back into the main pool or lake.

I was thinking to find a place with a large body of water, build below it, and then empty it on top.
