Sure, cut this.

If someone wants to YKTTW a trope about the smart member of a group being a minority because of tokenism or positive discrimination or whatever, fine, but that's not what this article is.

Well, there's the crowner.

Oh wow, we're really considering cutting this? It's a subversion of a common stereotype, are we so wrapped in Not A Subversion and the literal definition of a trope?

Well I'm not sure about cutting this. But again, by the terms used on this site, it's AVERTING most black stereotypes, not subverting them.

Yet it's just silly to think it's either this or Scary Black Man. We also have the gangsta stereotype, the rapper, the athlete, and god help us, the older stereotypes. Neither of these are noted to be geniuses.

But the trope would still need a strong definition to make something legit. The example for Die Hard notes that Theo keeps making Basketball references.

So this could work if redefined to a character who combines both nerd and black stereotypes. I'm putting that on the crowner, and should that get the lead, I propose afterward we rename it to make that definition clear.

[up][up] Because it's Not A Subversion, unless there's something in a work to make to believe that a black character is going to be a sterotype, then simply portraying him as smart or nerdy is not subverting a stereotype. It's just an aversion. No setup, no subversion, it's that simple.

[up] Are basketball facts considered nerdy?

[up]No, that's the black stereotype part. Him cracking a super tough safe is the nerdy part.

[up] That could work but the stereotype is really gonna have to be stressed otherwise we're gonna get black characters that avert type 1 Hollywood Nerd.

So what if they do? This isn't Hollywood Nerd+Black anyway.

Well maybe it's not a subversion but more of a Stereotype Flip. In America media blacks (and other races) tend to be categorized in narrow roles typically the "aggressive" role (Scary Black Man and Sassy Black Woman) and not milquetoast geek. I say do a wick check to see if it's being used wrong (which it mostly likely won't).

I see nothing wrong here, if it needs a change maybe name it to Non Threatening Black Person or something.

I love how if we go with the crowner's leading choice, we'll probably have to delete every example except for the Die Hard one...
