To be fair, those sections of his backstory did happen in his early youth. Shiro may not remember the full extent of their relationship either, as she never really refers to it (although the whole "aceman" thing certainly shows that something made it through). So there wouldn't really be anyone to make that big of a fanfare about it.
On a less spoilerific note, making whatsherface actually huggable would neuter her entire character. It would literally require the loss of her entire characterization. Considering how distinctive her mannerisms are, any change in that direction would probably be negated by the bare bones of her character. So there's a lot of leeway there on the scale of "making her likeable" vs "derailing her".

Just curious - in the OP, there's a shirtless dude that shows up briefly after Minatsuki shows her crazy face. Has anyone managed to work out who that is? (With his muscles, it seems like Senji at first glance; but this guy has scars on his body like Shiro does.)
(If it's a character that hasn't appeared in the anime yet, I guess the manga readers could reply in spoilers if anyone's figured it out. Could it be Mockingbird? I seem to recall he has all those scars too. But I don't think he's quite that muscular.)
Jesus christ, has a SINGLE episode gone by without Yoh receiving some horrific injury or another? Poor lad has had his ass handed to him by pretty much everyone.
Actually, yes, he managed to not get beaten to a pulp in episode 5. But that was because he didn't really do much of anything in episode 5.
His constant beatings have become a little bit of an inside joke between my friend and I, Y'see.
I'm gonna go and guess that nobody checked the data on the card.
@ashnazg: My money's on either Nagi or Genkaku.
Wow. That episode had one of the goriest death scenes i've ever scene. I'm a bit sick to my stomach, actually...
Also, can we get a running tally of how many times Shiro's appeared and saved the day?

I officially called everything that happened in episode 9 before it happened. Well, except this trope but i'm still hoping that happens next week.
Aw, I got most things except I figured the chip had doctored data on it that would have made the Deadmen look even worse, rather than just being a bomb.

Another entertaining episode (good to see Mockingbird al last) something is bugging me though was it just me or was there a bit missing when the deadmen got to the top of the elevator, it didn't seem to flow naturally for some reason
I guess they're trying to put a lot of manga into a relatively short anime, but I agree that it didn't really feel right when they suddenly weren't out in the open anymore
Okay. Um. As of Episode 10 i think i'm a little GAR for Senji. I'm blasting some Crow's Claw right now in his honor. They should do a theme song for him.
For the first time in...ever, I think, I actually laughed at this show when Makina's assistant was getting all turned on while they were hiding in the vent.
Tumblr here.Les Yay! Yay! Of course, given that this show is obsessively, opressively bleak with a bodycount rivaling Tomino i doubt they'll get a happy ending.
Dear various commenters on Crunchyroll: Fuck you. If you watched your friends and classmates get horribly killed at random, would you be a total badass on the level of Kenshiro? No. You'd be just as scared and confused as Ganta.
For similar reasons, please also shut the fuck up about Shinji and Madoka.
Evidently they're used to Bleach, the bastards.
Also: why would you read what is essentially You Tube video comments?
Yeah, everything Ganta has done so far is perfectly reasonable given his plight. Hell, he's held up better than most people would have. Nagi's The Woobie for me though. He's been through a worse hell than any other anime character i've ever seen. Dude barely flinched while he was being flayed alive. It's like he didn't even care anymore.

Y'know, I actually had a bit of realization about Nagi, today. Remember how it turned out that he massacred a bunch of undertakers and then repressed the memory of doing so? He's been driven insane.
It's not that he's badass enough of the kind of punishment to not affect him, or anything like that. It's just that he's so dead inside that he simply doesn't care how much suffering he gets put through.
Oh, for Pete's sake. You're telling me that the gang didn't realise the chip was a bomb even after Shiro had all the skin on her shoulder scorched off by its blast? And then went apeshit on her for saving all their lives? Sorry, but I'm with Rokuro here. That just puts them into Too Dumb to Live territory.
What's precedent ever done for us?I agree that I was facepalming badly when no one seemed to notice Shiro was actually saving their lives, when that chip exploded almost in front of them.
^^Would you be thinking clearly after seeing so many people dead for the thing you had been charged to protect? I really don't get why people expect rational thought from anyone in this show.
The vault she threw it into was already filled with explosive materials, actually. Then again considering everything that just happened i would wonder why they noticed that.
Being angry at losing your ticket out? That's fine. Failing to grasp that the thing that just exploded was a bomb? Not so much. Even with stress-induced irrationality, there are limits.
At the very least, you'd expect one of them to figure it out.
What's precedent ever done for us?Agreed, I'd expect a minimum amount of sense at least, especially given they did have a little time to think about what just happened.
Hmm. Now, see, I can tell what you're doing here, show, but the problem is, if you try to make Minatsuki likeable, you make her less interesting. The last thing I want is for a glorious Moe subversion to end up turning into regular Moe.
Also, it's a little weak for Ganta to have conveniently forgotten large sections of his own backstory to avoid giving away twists early, and then for him to just remember with little to no fanfare later on.
Other than those minor issues, enjoyable enough.
