Hey, that doesn't mean it can't get a Spin-Off.
Follow me on tumblr!I wouldn't mind a 3 ep OVA spin-off for after the fact.
But no bringing back Menma. Unless she's reincarnated as a cat.
Sadly? Why, it would be better if it would have a weaker closure, just for the sake of more episodes?
Because cats are awesome. And Menma reminds me of an adorable kitten.
Pretty late, but I've finished the series just now. It was pretty bittersweet. I didn't find it that great, but I do love the group dynamic and the characters. It remained enjoyable despite some flaws.
Gotta say that Yukiatsu's my favorite character in terms of development. Probably the most fleshed-out character in the cast. In terms of personality, Naruko has to be my favorite.
Hmm, not much else to say, except that it's a great watch.
MAL || vndb || BlogWell, I only like Naruko (Anaru!) because she reminds me of Jessica from Dragon Quest VIII. So there's that~
Well that was a pretty good watch. At the very least I thought it would be far more clichéd than it ended up being.
IS Jintan's dad supposed to be some kind of a hippie, or is there some kind of freerange parenting subculture in Japan (which would also include Naota's dad).
Anyway, only minor criticisms, so I'd have to say this was a decent work. Could have been more concise, and I'd like to have seen a detailed segment (like a half-episode) dedicated to the group as children, but you piece together the the important points from the day Menma died, so I guess that's what matters.
I thought for a second they weren't going to do that moment at the end where all the group can see Menma, but I'm glad they did even if it went on for like 30 seconds longer than it should have.
So... Not much else I can say really. I'd be interested to see other shows featuring involving a ghost boy or girl, if they could do at least as good as this.

Hooray for ghost girl moe~
And here I thought I was more into robots.
I bawled at the end, and agree that Menma should be reincarnated as a kitten. Also if there is an OVA, it should be about the cast as children, long before (at least a week) Menma's death.

Loves feel-good animation a whole lot.So Ano Hana has been licensed. By NIS America as anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day. The special edition comes with a Blu-Ray and a 38-page hardcover artbook. I am very excited about this. Thoughts? Also, how have their anime releases been recieved? Toradora's the one I've heard most about, and none of that has been any criticism besides 'bawww no dub'.
"Yes, I'm rather pedantic about language. You could call me an anal linguist." (Retentive, of course.)Aw, it got licensed by NISA? Oh well, I'll still get it anyways.
Follow me on tumblr!I have to wonder if NIS America might be interested in licensing and releasing an anime movie. The show seems to have done pretty well for them; their initial print run sold out pretty quickly and they had to do a second print run (which is coming out at the end of the month); no idea how long that will last, either.
Maybe the success of this show will entice a larger company (Funi or Sentai) to pick up the movie and dub it?
No way! This series definitely will adapt itself well to movie format.
Loves feel-good animation a whole lot.Well yeah, but is there anything new that a movie could bring?
I'm all for making stories easier to consume, but if it's the same plot I probably won't watch it.
The movie is supposedly going to retell the story from Menma's point of view. It's up to you whether you think that will be different enough to be worth watching.
This may seem like a bad reason to bump the thread, but... this AMV. THIS AMV. My heart is breaking all over again ;_;
It's all the more heartbreaking if you've played Sonic Unleashed, but on its own it's still incredibly potent.

So I just started watching this (luckily Wakanim had it in their catalogue, yay). I had avoided it until now as I saw people everywhere saying that this series had crushed their souls; and then Mother's Basement recently made a video on it titled "the saddest anime", which I haven't watched but keeps nagging me in my recommendations. So I guess my masochism finally took the best of me.
The first 3 episodes do a good job of creating a fun and interesting group dynamic, with everyone in turn swinging between likeable and punchable-but-not-too-much. Except Poppo, he's the best. (Then again, if people called me "anaru" I wouldn't feel like being nice either. >.> )
The only question I have so far is: why doesn't Menma write stuff of the ground or something, as she can clearly interact with the physical world, including other people (cf Anjou feeling her weight when she hugs her)?
Anyway, I'll keep giving my impressions on the rest of the show.
I recently bought the anime on blu-ray and DVD. How does the movie compare to the series?
The Protomen enhanced my life. The reason Menma doesn't reveal herself right off is that she did attempt to do so with her family by bumping a table in episode 1, but since they can't see her, they all thought Satoshi bumped the table. She probably wasn't sure if revealing herself would really do anything. I've seen the series years ago, so I remember she doesn't do so until a later episode. But keep watching though! It can get a little melodramatic at times, but it's still very well written and has a lot more nuance than most shows centered around teenagers, and thankfully the teenagers here do have realistic flaws and are more well-rounded than most other characters!
I usually describe this show as "A boy sees a girl. Neither of them has a life."
Stories don't tell us monsters exist; we knew that already. They show us that monsters can be trademarked and milked for years.I'm at episode 7 now… While it's indeed extremely well written, with each character dealing with the loss and evolving in their own way, there hasn't really been a scene that punched me in the gut so far. It's rather an acumulation of bittersweet bites. It also looks like Menma's mom won't let them reopen her slowly-healing wounds. Which I can get. From the outside, what Jintan & co are trying to do seems entirely pointless.
Actually, I almost find the show funnier than sad, in a nostalgic way. Almost.
Episode 9… Well, I guess I partly have an answer to my question. She can communicate with the others, but chose not to for some reason. Maybe she was too afraid of disrupting the status quo? Anyway, it's cute how she treats Poppo as her big teddybear.
So Matsuyuki is trying to move on from Menma by flirting with Naruko? Of course we have an Exact Eavesdropping scene with Tsurumi. I can get why, but boy do I hate this trope with a passion.
Unexpectedly, the scene of Menma's mom crying while blaming the kids was the first one that actually hit me real hard. You can't help but put yourself in her shoes at that moment… the shoes of a mom who had to bury her own child…
PS: Did I say that I really love the opening? Because I really love the opening.

Aww, but I want to watch "We also never worked out the name of that one weird bug we saw the day before that other day"!
