Project 4th State Of Matter

So, anyone who follows my fanfic shenanigans, you are probably aware of a certain pair of ex-Plasma grunts named Tom and Roger. They originated and starred in my entry to last year’s Serebii fanfic contest entry, Rosecrantz and Guildenstern Are Plasbad, which as the name implies is a heavy bastardization of Tom Stoppard’s play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead taking the form of a buddy comedy about two hapless Team Plasma grunts during the events of Pokemon White.

Since then Tom and Roger have gone on to appear in numerous other fics of mine like Out in The Cold, Liberating Glamour, and a couple of the Yangverse Michronicles, as well as cameoing in Glitchstuck Wars, but the whole time I’ve been itching to revise their origional story so I can show it off to a bit more of its potential, as I consider custom for contest entries at this point. It doesn’t help that I’ve preliminary posted the contest draft on Serebii, FFNet, and AO3, but it hasn’t gotten much attention at all, probably due to me outright labeling it as a preliminary version of the story. By contrast, later stories starring Tom and Roger have gotten noticeably more attention, particularly Liberating Glamour, which someone outright reached out to me on Tumblr to praise me for.

(Granted, that was mostly for N’s outlandish role in that whole affair, but still.)

So now that both my entry for this year’s contest (Reality’s Edge, which I’ve gone on plenty about with certain people and on Tumblr) and the entry period for the contest itself are a wrap, I did my initial Serebii Yuletide entry too, I’ve gotten a chapter out for my first chapterfic project in years (Rude Awakening) in a much more timely fashion than the previous chapter, and some WAAPT obligations are now going to be settled at a later time for my sanity’s sake, I’ve finally decided to get the revised version of this story, which I’ve dubbed the “Re-PLASMAAAAA’d Edition”, up before the end of the year.

The bad news is it’s mid-December, I’ve got less than three weeks to properly revise this thing before the end of the year in relation, there will be holiday shenanigans aplenty to impede my progress, this happens to be my longest oneshot ever (it almost broke the Serebii contest 10,000 wordcount cap), I may wind up pinch-hitting for Serebii’s Yuletide (I almost had an early opportunity to do so this week but someone managed claim the orphan prompts quicker than I did), and of course due to anxiety and SAD my motivation ebbs and flows.

The good news is this is a revision, not an full-blown rewrite or a brand new story, I’ll have the weekdays up until Christmas Eve Saturday mostly free at least, and most importantly due to rereading the judge feedback on the story and my own responses to it relatively recently I have a very good idea of what to actually do.

On that note, since I’ve seen a couple out-of-RP friends of mine ramble on about what they want to do with their fics publicly (plus both of them have expressed interest in seeing the final product, along with multiple others), I’d figured I’d tentatively list what I want to do fine-tuning this story to help my motivation, mainly because it consists of two categories of revision: Trimming excess exposition and unnecessary scenes, and giving some much-needed expansion to certain characters and character relationships:

The Cutlist:

• Cut the scene with Roger and the Munna-kicking Plasma Grunts - it’s not very believable and Roger has plenty of other reasons to lose faith in Team Plasma.
• Heavily rewrite the beginning of the Ferris wheel scene to make Tom and Roger less cartoonishly compent for a grand total of five seconds and substitute it with something actually funny (because Silent wishes it so).
• Cut the in-universe explanation at the beginning of the fic of who N and Ghetsis look like because come on, Tom and Roger would know that already.
• Cut the bit where Roger complains about N losing to the Canon Protagonist™ and get straight to the important bit.
• Cut that Emperor’s New Groove homage that didn’t work in context as well as I intended.
• Just... Cut or retool a lot of extra dialogue padding and shit that’s already clear from body language or reading the story (or playing B/W for much of the exposition) unless it’s actually necessary in-character.
• Cut my ungodly amount of punctuation and tense errors.

The Characterization List:

• Draw out the development of Tom and Roger’s relationship with N since it was a bit rushed initially.
• Develop Tom and Roger’s relationship with each other more, especially adding some more genuine conflict between them.
• Expand on Vladmir and Estragon’s roles, because I always felt bad about how they got kinda sidelined and thus have continued to be sidelined. Also give them their names earlier because that confused literally everybody.
• Give Ghetsis more of a role because the judges and one of the beta readers felt he was kind of a One-Scene Wonder, and honestly so do I, especially since he’s the spiritual Claudius stand-in. (Plus he wouldn’t take Tom and Roger’s meddling with N as lightly as I inadvertently implied he did.)
• On that note incorporate the Shadow Triad since I recently got ideas for how to incorporate them and keep them creepy and menacing without totally derailing the fic’s plot or tone. Hooray!
• Incorporate that one suggestion of a certain judge’s about Tom looking like a heartbroken puppy during one particular scene because that would be so in character for him I don’t even

Overall, this project currently sounds kind of hard, but very much possible and likely even feasible, especially given having or giving myself a deadline for something that’s all on me boosts the ol’ motivation. Still, I could definitely use emotional support - especially since if I get this done on time I’ll post the whole frigging revised oneshot on Tumblr and on the second forum for your reading pleasure alongside everywhere else. So keep poking and prodding me to get this done - it’ll really help!

As Crow said, first stage starter evos don't fall under spoiler category, so Psyche, Seregey, Izshta, you can unspoiler you requests.

Also, can I get Locke's beleated gift from RP!Seregy instead? No offense to Dogs, but I don't think any of my characters have met RP!Seregy before and it'd be good for getting out of my comfort zone.

Also also... Good news, everyone! Project 4th State Of Matter is already preemptively done! I say preemptively because I still need one last thing: People to beta it for the following:

• Punctuation errors.

• Tense errors. (I have a habit of lapsing into present tense in prose writing I'm trying to fix.)

• Any artifacts of the old version that conflict with the conituity of the new, at least in a way that sticks out like a sore thumb even if you haven't read the old version of Rosencrantz and Guldenstern Are Plasbad.

This makes sense, I just remember there being a thing about it being lifted a month after the games' release date, and based it off of that.

That was the origional plan and usual policy, but we eventually amended it to Christmas since aforementioned thing about many people getting the game then plus it being exactly only one week later.

Yeah, I said i'd be back as soon as I beat the maingame of Pokémon Sun and I did and now i'm back! And it was reeeallly good like probably my favourite game on the 3DS so far.

So uh, apparently Starter first stage aren't spoilers so I'm just gonna say I picked Litten and I did not regret my decision at all, and I decided to play the game using only Gen VII Pokémon...Well, except for the Event Munchlax at first but I eventually swapped him out too for a Gen VII 'mon for personal reasons.

So what did I miss while I was gone on my trip to Alola?

I'd just like to note I've made a very slight but notable alteration to Locke's backstory in his bio I posted a few pages back.

I will hint this is because I had big plans for my fifth anniversary that were initially derailed by him until I figured out how to tie him into them in an interesting fashion that involves recycling some long-scrapped ideas in an unconventional way.
