"The Best" and "The Worst" are now scheduled to air this and next Friday, respectively.

It seems the rush of episodes originally listed as airing next week isn't happening, and they're instead just airing one per week for the foreseeable future. I'm mostly OK with that, but you'd think they need less than a six months hiatus just to go back to weekly episodes.

So I didn't notice it the first time, but after Carmen told Gumball to be careful how he held his pen, he totally tried to flip her off.

On the one hand, Carmen was legitimately annoying and kind of smug. Like let people eat what they want.

On the other hand, Gumball was far more insufferable and went way too far to get back at her.

I didn't really enjoy this episode. The only really funny part was Darwin's Oh, Crap! moment when he accidentally uploaded the video.

Like let people eat what they want.
Telling someone what they're eating is unhealthy isn't the same as preventing them from eating it.

Did they pull a South Park and talk about SJW culture?

This was discussed in the spoiler marks last page. And it was like a two minute scene, so you can easily watch it yourself.

I read them, and I still find it pretty clever for them to do this. I'm not offended by it, or anything, just found it hilarious how many adult trends this show tends to get away with.

No, they did not talk about SJW culture. Gumball does say he's "mastered the way of the social justice warrior" and tells Carmen to "check her privilege", but he was doing this solely to piss her off because he was pissed at her being a little bit harsh in criticizing his bad habits, which...she was completely right about in the first place because Gumball is a dick. Thinking it's calling out SJW culture requires blatantly misreading the scene and the episode.

Of course, as I've said, the writers could've been a lot more blunt, I guess, but it's annoying how people jumped on that scene to say "Lol Gumball is making fun of le SJW's" when that's not what the damn thing was supposed to be about.

Let me rephrase that then: The "Gumball masters the art of the Social Justice Warrior" scene seems like a jab at SJW culture and just like how they did it on South Park, it was pretty funny to see.

But, Carmen through and through did seem like a total Mary Sue and that's still not good. Just because she was right, doesn't mean she has to be smug.

And I'm going to say it again: within the context of the episode, it was not a jab at "SJW culture". Reading it as such requires ignoring the context of everything in the episode.

And for god's sake, are we now calling characters Mary Sues just because they're "a little smug"? Gumball was blatantly shown as in the wrong there, even disregarding Carmen's smugness she was absolutely right about Gumball.

I didn't say the whole episode was about SJ Ws. I followed the plot like everyone else, even though id didn't particularly care for it. Can you stop assuming for a second that I didn't watch the whole episode just because I thought one scene was similar to a whole different show?

You keep phrasing it as if that scene were a jab at "SJW culture" when I keep pointing out that it wasn't. I admit I'm probably coming off strongly and I apologize for that, but good lord the amount of people jerking themselves off over a cartoon allegedly "taking on the SJW's" is so insufferable that it makes me get a bit on edge over it. Seriously, I've been seeing a bunch of shitty cartoon review videos popping up on You Tube talking about it with flagrantly clickbait headlines, and it just reminds me why I hate most cartoon reviewers so much.

I can admit, calling it "A jab" is not the correct term. If anything, that one two min. scene was most likely put in simply to have Gumball piss off Carmen, and fail, like you said. Sorry for being so difficult.

But in all honesty, what elementary grade kids know what a Social Justice Warrior is?

Damn funny moment though. [lol]

Gumball using the power to make anyone sound like a jerk but Carmen says stuff so genuinely nice & cannot be construed as offensive that his strategy completely falls apart.

Gumball really needs to chill when dealing with Carmen & Alan. They bring out the absolute worst in the dumb little cat, heheh. tongue

It was about mocking people who deflect criticism of themselves by painting it as intolerance, not anyone who claims to fight intolerance. Gumball not appreciating the difference was why he lost (and started) argument.

Personally, my only problems were using the actual terms felt gratuitous and the tumblr parody is beating a dead horse.

Gumball doesn't want to improve himself, mostly because he's afraid of failing... but he's also a huge narcissist. So if anyone seems to be better than him, he resents them and desperately craves for them to secretly be worse.

Alan is Gumball's Ned Flanders is what I'm saying.

[up]The context basically explains what he meant—which is why I think using the term was gratuitous.

Okay, so I'm going to try to express my issues with "The Best" by comparing it to "The Saint", which has kind of a similar plot.

So the main thing to note is how Gumball reacts to Alan vs. Carmen. In "The Saint", Gumball goes to increasingly ridiculous lengths to make Alan mad, like having the clown use Alan's parents as balloon animals. It's still horrible, yes, but it's insane Crosses the Line Twice humor so it's easy to let Gumball's actions slide for a laugh. In "The Best" he starts off with some semi-ridiculous stunt (learning how to be a SJW or whatever), but then he goes for ruining Carmen's reputation in a way that isn't really played for laughs nor really ridiculous by trying to expose her past expulsion. The fact this is more realistic (for the lack of a better term) means it hits closer to home and thus makes Gumball seem like a huge scumbag to me, even though he's technically done far worse things before.

There's also how Alan is a Parody Sue while Carmen is more normal. Alan a far better comedic foil to Gumball by being something of his opposite and taking everything in stride, while Carmen just highlights how horrible Gumball can be without adding to the comedy because she's not playing off of him.

So we're now finding out about what may be the strangest cast of The Other Marty: "The News" aired in Africa back in July, and yesterday in the UK, but they weren't showing the same version of the episode: The anchor hosting the episode was originally the show's editor (as in the man himself in live-action, just like he was in "The Authority" and "The Signal"), which was replaced with a (still live-action) paper bag puppet. Africa somehow got and aired the incomplete cut featuring the former.

[up][up] I didn't mind it I guess because how realistic it actually was. Since Gumball couldn't actually beat Carmen in a "public argument" he essentially resorted to trying to doxx her to discredit her instead. I get how it leans a little too close to the ugly side of callout culture, but I think it was still pretty effective satire.
