You know, I don't think people are going to see the point before we make page for Bye, fill it with random trivia, few pointless examples, link it to random pages where word "Bye" appears and say "You can't remove it!"

Someone brought up that this allegedly does not hurt the wiki. Wikipedia explains my response to this better than I could (admittedly their argument is Wikipedia-centric, and We Are Not Wikipedia, so I've only quoted the most relevant paragraph):

As for articles about subjects that do not hold to our basic tenets (verifiability, notability, and using reliable sources), keeping them actually can do more harm than one realizes – it sets a precedent that dictates that literally anything can go here.

Seriously, is this really something to get all worked up about? So what if the page is silly and pointless and frivolous? It makes "Hello, My Name Is Inigo Montoya" an All Blue Entry. Obviously, it's enough fun that it's bringing a lot of people to the wiki.

My Name Is Inigo Montoya isn't an All Blue Entry, and if the argument in defense of this page is just about making Catch Phrases appear in Blue Link text, we don't need a junk page with a completely meaningless concept behind it to make the word appear in a Blue Link. Any Pot Hole in that space would get the job you desire done just as well.

I think you've already defeated your own argument to the point where no matter what you say you're not going to get the page cutlisted without some much better reasons. Personally, I suggest you move on to the next evil page in need of purging.

[up][up][up][up]This is a really good idea. It lets people who find the meme funny write it without having to pothole some random thing for "Hello", and it does away with what may be the most pointless page on the wiki.

Seems win-win to me.

^^ How did I defeat my own argument? Having 600 outside referrals doesn't excuse the clear problems this page has.

As a Just for Fun page, as it has been insisted, it's been misused as a trope on work pages and indexes. That goes against our own guidelines for these types of pages.

As a trope, it's textbook People Sitting On Chairs. That's against our guidelines for tropes.

Which is this page—a trope or a Just for Fun article? And which way do we want to look at the problem that needs fixing?

People are trying to argue some airy, "Maybe something bad could happen one day because of this" against measurable drawing power, and years of it being a non-issue. If it becomes a problem we can deal with that problem. In it's current state it's not presenting an actual problem, and is in fact providing a tangible benefit to the wiki.

What do we gain by cutting it? No one can point to it as a precedent? No one's doing that now, so that's null. No, I can't see cutting it as anything less than an actively harmful course.

If people want to go around unlinking the word on work pages, that's within current guidelines, so more power to them, though I consider it a greater example of uselessness manifest than the page could ever hope to be.

I could get behind the idea of making Hello part of a redirect to My Name Is Inigo Montoya. The idea of just potholing Hello to something else sounds good- if you think the goal of the Hello page is just to make the line all blue links. I think it goes further than that and is trying to make the line entirely made up of Trope Namers, in which case potholing wouldn't do a thing. If it were part of a redirect, it could at least still be considered part of a name for a page.

Well if it is a just for the all blue entry, I ask for a removal of every example of this trope which isn't the all blue entry.

How exactly is this bringing people to the wiki? It's based on an in-joke that exists within the site itself (namely our raging boner for The Princess Bride), not any kind of thing that could bring people in.

I thought that Hello had to do with use of the word "Hello" in a threatening or less-than-friendly manner, as it is in "Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya." or "Hello, Clarice." At least, that was my understanding of the trope last time I read it. I think.

Hello... Newman.

How about turning Hello into an index of greeting tropes, including but not limited to Crash-Into Hello ?

Anyway, index idea soudns good. Doesn't create redlinks and actualy helps wiki.

All three examples I listed would fit, wouldn't they? "Hello" said with an intonation, and possibly in a situation, which has it -not- meaning 'a friendly greeting'?

I'm not familiar with Silence Of The Lambs, that's why I was asking.

But if that's what you mean, that definitely seems tropable.

The words "Hello, Clarise" were never uttered by Hannibal Lecter in The Silence Of The Lambs so that one wouldn't be an example for the proposed trope, anyway.

The correct line, for the record, is "Good evening, Clarise."

I... think he -did- say "Hello, Clarice" in Silence Of The Lambs, but not in the scene that people usually associate with the line. It's possible I'm just muddling it all up in my head.

Either way, now that I think about it, probably would do well to make the YKTTW Threatening Greeting, instead.
