Is it even worth starting threads related to abortion at all?

I was thinking going to make a thread wherein I bitched about this piece of news. But then I remembered what happened to every thread in recent memory wherein the topic of abortion came up.

Should I even bother? I feel strongly about the issue...

You should have no problem voicing your opinion, it's just a matter of doing it in a mature manner. The problem with abortion is that it's an emotionally driven topic and many people let their anger get the better of them, resulting in a flame fest. It'd be great if everyone took a breather before making each post, but that's unlikely to happen. It's just a matter of saying what you think without being insulting about it and hope someone else gives a legitimate response.

The thing about making witty signature lines is that it first needs to actually be witty.

Say what you think needs to be said. I like opinions, dammit (blind belief on the other hand...).

Usht, that's the ideal, but it seems rather pointless since I can be as polite as possible but there will be, I guess, 20 posts tops before civility goes out the window.

I want to make the topic "Why we shouldn't criminalize abortion round 473" but I don't see how it will last any meaningful amount of time.

What's our hit/miss record for abortion?

Except for 4/1/2011. That day lingers in my memory like...metaphor here...I should go.

Can we at least agree that pregnant women who are depressed to the point of attempting suicide should not be criminally charged for causing injury or death to their fetuses? It's not like this poor gal had any reasonable choice in the matter. Her brain chemistry was all fucked up.

Abortion manages to concern itself with a significantly large number of flame issues.

  • Religion
  • Freedom
  • Gender wank
  • Children
  • Law
  • Women's rights
  • Men's rights
  • Science in areas of touchy nature
  • Youth rights
  • And much, much more!

Even on a forum as good as this one, there is going to be some yelling and hate on every page. Except for the lighthearted and comedic derails.

The pro-life side sees the inhumane massacre of millions of defenseless people, while the pro-choice side sees countless women unfairly enslaved and cruelly tortured, even unto the pain of death.

The flame potential here is astounding.

[down]Oh my, I missed such an obvious one.

[up] You forgot 'definitions of personhood', too.

Yeah, I can't see another abortion thread going anywhere fast. Everything to be said has been said.

No, we cannot agree on that.

Every decision that anyone ever makes is a product of brain chemistry. Either every voluntary (that is, non-coerced) action you undertake while conscious is your responsibility, or none of them are.

That woman felt sad, and so she chose to try to kill herself.

I am not going to open up the can of worms that is the debate of whether a fetus is a person or not*

, but she is unequivocally responsible for her own actions, regardless of her emotional state.

[up]Oh noes! Don't kill the meta, the DELICIOUS meta!

This is a meta abortion thread, not an abortion thread. We talk about how abortion threads blow over.

Kara did qualify "fucked up" brain chemistry, not "regular ordinary sane" brain chemistry.

Well, as far as I can see that's the main reason they always fail. Differences of opinion on what constitutes a person.

Everything else, I'm sure people could compromise or even be convinced to the other side about. But that one question seems to be the real sticking point on which the whole argument erupts over.

[up][up]One could argue that any brain chemistry that leads to irrational or detrimental action is "fucked up."

Dude, she had clinical depression. That means "fucked up brain chemistry". Don't try to play semantics bullshit.

To answer the thread question... yes. Yes it is. Even if you don't change others' minds, you get to learn more about the abortion debate yourself. Though I'm for keeping abortion legal, I've found through abortion debates that many arguments for that perspective happen to be arguments I don't like.

Might be better to just necro the abortion threads that still aren't locked yet...if they're all locked, just make a new one.

I don't know — I do remember one really good abortion thread here, like, a year ago. It went on for a lot of pages, and managed to not get locked or get too heated for a good long while. It also didn't just stay with the usual legality issues, ether. I even felt like I learned a few things, from following that thread…

I am not the one who started talking about "fucked up" brain chemistry being a pass for grown adults to do whatever they want. If you want to argue that some brain activity fitting arbitrary levels of "fucked up" absolves conscious people of responsibility for their own actions, you are the one bringing semantics into it.

Wasn't that the one that eventually derailed into definition of "personhood"? Anyone who jumped in at the point would never be able to tell if it's even about abortion.
