Is there really a difference? I think so. It's one thing to fantasize about making someone your slave but a whole nother thing to desire to see them as your slave. So, thoughts on the issue?

Fantasizing is something I do when I'd like something to be that way but realize there's implications in it that make it either out right impossible or immoral.

Desiring, however, I typically define as wanting something I can actually get.

Thus why I'll have fantasies about making leaps and bounds of over a hundred miles but actually work towards just hitting the eight foot mark on the standing long jump.

The thing about making witty signature lines is that it first needs to actually be witty.

There is a difference, but it is a very fine, blurry, line. More so than many realize, I bet.

Desire for me means the same thing as want. It's just a want. A feeling of "I want this". It doesn't need to be something you can feasibly have or something you are fine with on a moral level. It is just something you want.

Fantasizing is well...fantasizing. Day dreams, basically. You can fantasize without truly desiring to carry something out. I can fantasize about raping young boys, but not really want to go out and rape young boys (I find actual young boys to be less sexually appealing than a rock). You can also fantasize about something you want to do without really thinking that it is something you want to do. Lines can get a bit blurry.

There's nothing wrong with fantasies. Desires can actually be bad.

Except for 4/1/2011. That day lingers in my memory like...metaphor here...I should go.

Having desires is something normal for humans. Bad control of it however, is bad.

Yes, there is a difference. This one has quite a lot of fantasies that never translate into actual desires. As in, if someone offered me to make my fantasy true (without any legal repercussions), this one would be utterly horrified.

Another thing - quite a lot of fantasies are attractive because they are wrong.

I'm vaguely disturbed by the fact that whenever I see this topic, it's always hovering over "Gang rape of 11 year old girl"

Don't think too hard about that one. It's just best not to.

I fantasized once about turning into a dog and mauling one of my bullies, which made him physically disabled and his former friends decided to bully him, and that made him realize bullying was bad and become my friend. If I actually could have turned into a dog, though, I wouldn't have mauled him, even if there was no danger to me in doing so. (Instead, I'd have turned into a dog so people looking to pester me couldn't find me because they didn't know I was the dog.)

If I'm asking for advice on a story idea, don't tell me it can't be done.

(^ Sirius Black, is that you?)

Another one for the "Yes they're different" pile. You can fantasize about things you desire, and desire things you fantasize, but that doesn't mean they're the same thing.

Hell, even if they where, that isn't exactly a value judgment on ether — people can desire and fantasize about positive things, on occasion, and don't always play out the negative ones. Not realizing the things you want and the things you think about should not be directly copied in reality, however...

I fantasize about punching people. I do not desire to punch people. I do desire to have a yummy sandwich in my hand right now. But fantasizing about it will only make me hungrier.

To me, a fantasy is just something you entertain in your head, knowing it might be impossible, immoral, or whatever.

Desire is you actually wanting to do it.

For example, I'm sure we've all had weird sexual fantasies, but would never want to do them in real life. (no examples please)

Gonna have to disagree with almost all of you; desires and fantasies exist to be satisfied and explored. I can't think of one off the top of my head that a person couldn't act out in a healthy and consensual fashion, with the application of a little work and imagination.

You're selling your humanity short if you don't.

@Wicked: rape fantasies can be satisfied. I've been personally involved in the process. It can happen, without anyone getting actually hurt.

Try again, sir/madam.

BTW, what is guro? (please no links, an explanation will suffice)

I'd have to agree with Drunk on this one: they're there to be explored. Uncharted territory! And not just sexual desires or fantasies either.

However, I think that they can be explored differently. I can fantasize about being a teacher, and explore that fantasy by seeing if I'm even qualified to be one. On the other hand, I can desire to be a teacher, and explore that by applying to various positions within the educational field.

Fantasies can be explored in the head more readily than desires can me thinks, though both can be explored in very much the same way. It differs from place to place, person to person, and such and such. But they're there for a reason, so why not look into them more?

Me personally, I'm just waiting for someone to drop a "morality" bomb on the issue. Then I can see this thread skyrocket in pages count.

Oddly, I found this thread not too long after discussing amputee fetishism in the Fetish thread. It's not something I desire anymore, as much as I've fantasized about it.

I also agree with Drunk, you can explore fantasies in a consensual environment as long as the other person(s) goes along with it. Which is totally different from acting out on them (for fantasies that will get you in trouble).

Not all fantasies are possible to explore IRL. Things that involve shapeshifting, dragons or levitation for instance. Fantasies aren't bound by silly real world concerns like physics.
