I suddenly and unexpectedly found myself with a copy of this game, courtesy off GOG. Sadly, it has no manual.

So, anybody have any experience with the game? Is it any good, once you get past the interface and learning curve?

Yes. You should have snagged Jagged Alliance 2, however.

Heh. Didn't have a choice in the matter, it was apparently a free giveaway.

It's still a wonderful game. The manual is easily googleable and downloadable off of any abandonware site that has the game listed.

Doesn't GoG have manuals for download?

Some games are missing the manuals, oddly. Deadly Games is one of them.

If you like JA, you'll love JA 2. One of the all time great sequels.

Sadly, while the premise is interesting and the controls aren't bad, I am seriously turned off by the arbitrary time limits. Really, do you *have* to put a turn limit on *every* mission?

It's been awhile since I played either of them but I actually liked Deadly Games a bit more than Jagged Alliance 2.

Hmm, speaking of which, has anyone here ever played the first Jagged Alliance? And how does the DS remake compare to the PC original?

I have. The DS remake is exceptionally clunky because they didn't think of a comfortable way of replicating the right mouse click. Also, it's a lot lighter on speech than I remember the original being. But it's as a 1:1 port as possible for a DOS-to-DS transition.

To query, does Jagged Alliance 2 have turn limits for missions? I ask because I am tempted to get either JA 2 or X-Com, to fill a growing "mixed tactical/strategy game" itch. And X-Com, while reputed to be Nintendo Hard, at least doesn't have turn limits.

It doesn't. It's inarguably an Even Better Sequel.

[up] Cool. I still haven't decided between them, though. I'll likely get both eventually, they aren't exactly pricey.

For some reason, I never liked X-Com. Even with turn limits and everything, I felt like Jagged Alliance did just about everything better. Speaking of Turn Limits, its been awhile but I seem to recall there being a non-cheating way to make turns practically unlimited.

You know what? I have this game, I should freaking install it and play it to make sure I know what I'm talking about.

I liked the first two X-Coms. They were awesome. Especially since they managed to pull off an equivalent of Loads And Loads Of Characters all of which were entirely randomly-generated. You would start with these luckless volunteers that only wanted to look at live aliens and, if you were lucky, some of them would grow into badasses that would see the alien invasion eliminated.
