Yeah, Knuckles definitely. I just think that Bowser could pull it off if everything plays out right for him, especially considering he's not as evil as Eggman is.
I'm not going to argue too hard on why I think it could work. The thought only occurred to me while I was watching some Mario Odyssey and thought about how Sonic usually fights robots or monsters while Mario is always fighting mostly funny animals, not unlike Sonic.
Maybe he doesn't have to get tricked by Bowser, but he might react if he sees Mario stomp a koopa without context. I was also thinking if Sonic wound up in the Mario world, but he fell in Bowser's kingdom instead of the Mushroom kingdom and got all his information from, say, Bowser Jr, who's not so Obviously Evil as Sr.
Or at least maybe Sonic would know not to trust Bowser but just plays along for fun for a while.
Granted I know the bare minimum about Mario so meh.

Personally, I could imagine Mario and Sonic instantly teaming up, and it's Dr. Eggman and Bowser who bitterly fight each other to the end.

Like i said I don't know Mario. It's not like Sonic would know about the mask either.
I don't really care about it anymore. Just thought it would be a neat turn that Sonic would assume he needs to protect the animals but ends up on the wrong side because if it, but i guess not.

So apparently, Sonic Forces uses a modified version of Lost World's physics engine according to Resetera. Which i could find the source of that info because they sure didn't post any proof
...was it not stated to be running on a new engine called Hedgehog Engine 2, or something?

I just realized something: why does nobody care about Burning Rangers?
I mean, really; Sonic fans don't care about it, Ni GHTS fans don't care about it, even SEGA fans don't care about it. Why? Is it just missing that certain, say, je ne sais quoi, that something like NiD does?

The funniest thing about Burning Rangers is that I only found out about it because a local Arcade I go to had it's theme song on Karaoke one day. Its surprisingly catchy and it's lyrics are full Narm Charm like any Sonic song.

Judy Totoya said some stuff on pixiv about Tails' development:
- Tails was never meant to either be a tanuki or a girl. The latter happened due to how his chesthair was drawn
- He designed Tails as a 5 year old
- One of the early designs for Tails didn't have the white area around his eyes, and one tail
- He decided to give Tails a favourite car (Lotus Super Seven) because he was told by SEGA Sonic has a favourite car (Lamborghini Countach)
- The Anime Hair on his forehead is on the right side
