The original complaint that sparked this discussion was that the person DID blast through one of the Zones, and lost their last life to the Boss, and they don't like the fact that they have to arbitrarily go through the Zone they already blasted through once again to face that same boss.

Fortunately, Sonic Forces is getting rid of the Lives system, so this inconvenience will soon be a thing of the past.

I dunno, stuff like that just seems normal to me lol. You failed the challenge, so you have to retry.

Yeah, that's what the checkpoint is for.

Checkpoints are already in the game...

Honestly, some type of progression is in order...

Like in Advance 2 it saves per Act, not per Zone...

Okay, I'm just popping in here to ask one quick question because I don't want anything spoiled. I know the game has save files just like Sonic 3. How many save files does it have?

The claim that lives are are archaic is weird, given that many platformers still use them to this day. I feel like it's something that's nobody thinks about until a game comes a long that goes for more of a challenge, in which case "I can't hold onto my lives, why is this still a thing" suddenly starts making rounds. It even became a bit of gaming news with Crash Bandicoot.

It's like reshoots in films. They're practically expected for most movies, but if a film has a lot of hype behind it it's suddenly news.

Yeah, that's what the checkpoint is for.

Checkpoints are soft restarts for single mistakes. Loss of lives and restarting from saves are part of the game's Game Over condition.

It's the same thing you have to go through with any game that doesn't have manual saves: fail, and fight to get back to where you were. The reason why there are checkpoints and lives is because of the way the game is designed: Sonic levels are short and are designed with flow in mind, while not being designed for "checkpoint hopping" in mind. That's why most games that abandon lives do so: not because lives are a thing of the past, but because - especially with 3D games - the kind of challenge they're trying to present does not require them, vs games that do present that kind of challenge, and thus still use them even nowadays.

Some games have checkpoints only before or after extremely difficult sections, sections that are either long or are expected to cost many lives - these are the game's most likely to have infinite lives, because you're expected to lose many of them and spend a lot of time on any particular section. Meanwhile, Sonic games are designed to be a single experience - checkpoints are there for pacing. You're not spending a lot of time on a single checkpoint. You're probably not going to lose a lot of lives on any one thing. You're made to learn how to effectively flow through the entire level. Hence starting from the beginning after break the flow enough times.

So, special stages aside, Mania is pretty solid, which comes as no surprise.

It's one thing to make a spectacle. It's another to make a difference.

Honestly it's on it's way to being my favorite modern Sonic game, just due to how much love went into it. Even moreso than generations in my opinion.

Given Mania is effectively just a Sonic fan game with a real budget, it's kind of incredible how relatively little it takes for a game to be well received and ostensibly make money.

One of the first things I thought upon finishing this was a sense of excitement, and a desire for Sega to put this much effort refining other things about Sonic in the future. Conversations about which generation is better or not aside, can you imagine an Adventure-styled game with this level of dedication and polish, filing away the problems and emphasizing what made it loveable in the first place?

This game even has references to gameplay that's not specifically classic. Like Heavy Gunner totally being a Sonic Advance 2 boss battle.

Running bosses isn't exactly Advance 2 exclusive...

True, but the design: the mainly level field with abrupt but small changes in elevation, the very simple attacks of the boss with most the the difficulty being in how those small elevation changes and sudden ramps throw you off just enough to mess up your attempts to counter them, it's spoke a lot to how Sonic Advance designed its running battles.

It's very different from the way the Classic games did running battles. Like how Metal Sonic's running second phase is more Generations than Classic as well.

[up][up][up][up] You mean that people would be more than satisfied with a game that builds on it's good concepts and not shove new gimmicks down our throats in a misguided attempt at "pleasing everybody"?

Surely you jest.

I was able to get through most of the game just fine but even I am at a lost when it comes to the doppelganger races of Crisis City, Seaside Hill and Rooftop Run. Those levels are difficult enough but racing against the A.I. who is actually competent at getting through those levels and I slip up a lot. This is embarrassing but can anyone help or give me tips? I am really ashamed now.

Hi everyone. Tell me, is Titanic Monarch supposed to be gimmick-filled over-long bouncer bullshit? Answers in an envelope please.

I assume it's the last level, but man, I am hating it.

Yes, Titanic Monarch is the last level.

[up]No, the game's actually fairly simple for the most part. The level design is usually reasonable. Titanic Monarch just feels overstuffed and tedious. Goes with what I was saying before about overindulgence. There are just too many separate things going on, and it feels more like a slog than a challenge.

The part where you have to sling up on the magnet balls to hit the yellow bumpers moving up and down was pretty infuriating. Haven't beaten it yet.

I like the aesthetic of the Zone a lot (the look, the name, and even the music reminds me of Lord Brevon), but it's probably one of the most obnoxious final zones I've played in a Sonic game.

But it does speak well of the game that this is the first thing I can say I outright dislike. Everything else is nitpicking.
