Well, I'm gonna level with you guys. Again.

This "Generations 2" game seriously came out of nowhere (didn't watch the stream). When I saw the preview image thing of the You Tube video, I thought it was some fan game thing.

Really though, to anyone who actually saw the stream, how'd they announce it? Was it like "we still have one more little thing" or what?

Hate to rain on people's parades, but just because Alex Hirsch visited SEGA once, it doesn't mean he's working on the next Sonic game. Hell, if he is, they probably would've mentioned that in the teaser to get people more hyped.

As much as I'd love to see Sonic spindash into Bill Cypher, it's probably not gonna happen.

Also @ed, Sonic Dimensions would probably be a better name if Lego Dimensions wasn't doing their Sonic thing too.

Insert witty 'n clever quip here.

Really excited for both games! The trailers look awesome, although I'll have to have to wait for some actual gameplay of Project Sonic 2017 to know for sure. I do think they're focusing a little too much on classic sonic as a character, rather than taking the classic gameplay and expanding upon it. Still, I'm pretty sure I'll like it, since I've liked most of Sonic's recent outings.

So, Project Sonic 2017 looks like a new game in Generations' style (rather than necessarily Generations 2), and that's pretty dope - I've been thinking that they had been too rash to not use the Classic style they built up for the first game. Plus the idea of putting that concept into brand spanking new levels and areas can't be beat.

Looks like the plot involves them time travelling into a Bad Future.

One thing I would like to see is the ability to play as or with Tails (and/or Knuckles, I guess) in Classic Sonic's parts of the story. More playable stuff for Tails in general, actually.

Honestly I just want there to be a good, solid reason in-story for Classic to be there. I don't want him to be like the Wisps in Lost World.

I'm actually hyped for Classic Sonic's return. It's not something I would have expected, seemed like a one-time deal.

And I mean, come on:

It's a golden opportunity. Sonic racing himself? It doesn't work with Knuckles or Shadow because they're not as interested in having fun as Sonic himself is. Knuckles' shtick was getting in Sonic's way (and currently, being dumb as bricks), and Shadow barely gives a crap about Sonic after Sonic Heroes.

Of all his partners, Classic and Tails are the best choices. There's few video game mascots/protagonists who can say they've teamed up with younger versions of themselves (heck, Mario and Link are probably the only ones who can say that).

@Physical: I hope 'Lights, Camera, Action' becomes the new 'Up and down and all around'. It's a damn catchy 'kick in' moment for a song.

That's precisely why some of us are worried. Without context or further information, it just feels gimmicky to have him back again.

Wow, I missed a lot sleeping.

Manic's levels really do look like someone stuck CD and 3 in a mixing bowl, stuck it in an oven and then worked until golden brown.

[up](4) Though, the same could've been said about Tails, Knuckles, the Wisps, Shadow, Orbot, and Cubot when they became staples of the eras they were introduced in. The Wisps came back in Lost World for no apparent reason.

[up](3) I'm trying to remember where that afterimage Sonic has came from: was that in Sonic CD, the Sonic Advance games, or have I only seen that in fan games?

I have to admit, I'd be a lot more understanding of complaints if Classic Sonic was there for no reason than I was about the complaints when the Wisps returned.

But then, given the clear Bad Future tones of the trailer, I'm guessing time travel is just as involved in this one as it was in the last one - I don't doubt he'll have a good plot reason for being involved, especially since the lack of plot was a major criticism of Generations.

[up][up][up] The afterimage was Sonic Advance.

I had some amusing fan ideas of how to use zones in a possible Generations-style setup, like mashing certain related zones together in style (Oil Ocean and Sunset Park go well together, for example, and Green Hills/Mecha Green Hills is an obvious matchup) and playing out the requirement of getting BOTH timestones (via special stages) and chaos emeralds (via boss battles) to get the BEST ending. Without the time stones, it can all happen again, cue the Time Loop ending.

[up] (2) Knew it.

[up] On one hand, collecting glowing rocks of power has always been one of Sonic's biggest, most fulfilling challenges. On the other hand, I'm not looking forward to collecting two sets of rocks again.

But I do like the stage mash-up idea.

The only reasons I'm really not feeling Classic Sonic's appearance in the new game is because: 1) It was already done in Generations. 2) Classic Sonic already had a butt load of promotion through the night.

Like come on, let Modern have his time without having to share it.

[up][up]The one thing in my idea that stood out was a scene transition where Sonic would run through Oil Ocean, the cloud banks part, and suddenly you realize everything looks so rusted over and there are mine trapped rails everywhere. There would be a gigantic shoutout to Sunset Park 3 with a sequence involving the freight train boss before the level ends.

Also the Chaos Emeralds are collected as part of the story, the Time Stones are needed to get the True End.

They did almost totally bail on handheld representation last time. Maybe they've learned their lesson since then.

That is, if this game is going to have old levels return.

Modern has had plenty of time in the spotlight and look at where that got the franchise.

[up] (2) Sonic 3 already did something kind of like that. Having the stages actually transition into one another.

I'd say Modern's carried the franchise pretty well, all things considered.

Plus, it's not like a track you can just switch like that - it's not like some alternate version of the character they can decide not to care about: Modern Sonic is the character, for better or for worse. Classic Sonic, no matter what, is always going to be "the retro version" of the character - like if they made games styled like the original Zelda. What people are asking for when they ask for Modern is for signs that the franchise is looking forward in addition to looking back.

Excessively looking in a specific direction being Sonic Team's most notable flaw these days.
