[up]Well... Japan has had a unique love of mobile/handheld games that the rest of the world doesn't have.

Besides, Sonic isn't "unknown" in Japan like some people think. He has some level of popularity there, just not considered AAA there.

[up]If this means Sonic is rivaling Kancolle in popularity in Japan, then maybe I should consider the idea of Trigger doing a (not shitty) Sonic anime something MORE than a pipe dream? Because holy shit I want Trigger to do a good Sonic anime.

Like, you know what "Pokémon Origins" is to the main Pokémon show, yeah a Trigger Sonic should be that to Sonic Boom. Something aimed at the "older crown" but not some overly edgy attempt and grimdarking shit up like Shadow or Sonic 06.

@Frostav: Losing control briefly when you get hit is a mechanic on thousands of games and it will continue to be a mechanic in thousands more games. It's not bad game design, it's a punishment for getting hit.

I haven't played it, but from what I'm seeing it seems the issue is that it lasts so much longer.

To the point that when you get damaged, you literally can't avoid falling down a pit or into a wall.

I think a tiny bounce should happen when you get hurt, and you regain control when your character drops back down to the height they were hit at.

I do writing, feel free to check out my stories here! https://numbugwritingblog.tumblr.com/post/686233243868102656/numbugs-shared-heroic-uni

Eh, honestly, that's not a huge issue to me, at least not as much of an issue with how repetitive the game is. Like, to the point where you are literally playing the same level like 10 times, with maybe one slight difference each time, before you can play something with different level design.

@Waxing: That's what I'm saying.

And I'm not saying he's unknown. That just no one really gave a crap about him until now.

It's one thing to make a spectacle. It's another to make a difference.

[up]There's some Sonic fanart on niconico. Hell, I remember that Sega did a Sonic/Puyo Puyo crossover fanart contest on Niconico for the 20th Anniversary of both series (they're like a month apart)

I mean, Sonic's not super popular in Japan, but I think he's a lot bigger than you guys are giving him credit. Hell, even in the US Sonic's nowhere near as big as, say Mario, Pokémon or even the Zelda series (at least among the high school crowd, who mostly associate Sonic with creepy fanart that involves Sonic being touched in a way or in a place that makes him feel uncomfortable, and that's no good.)

I don't think a majority of Sonic fans can accurately say how big Sonic is in Japan, unless they're from Japan.

And now I'm going to be a hypocrite and guess just how popular Sonic is in Japan despite being from Australia.

I'm pretty sure Sonic was pretty big in the Genesis era if nothing else, with the shift towards American audiences happening around the time of Sonic Adventure (during some of Sega's most idiotic marketing moves in the company's history, like giving Shenmue $70 million to do god-knows-what with). Even then, I wouldn't doubt that a steady and loyal Japanese fanbase has been around for years, just like the western market. If anything, I could see Sonic Runners being more of a return to the public.

It's like if someone made a Roadrunner game that plays like an infinite runner game, and the game and character shot up in popularity among the crowd of older people who remembered watching Looney Tunes as a kid.

Sonic is bigger in the US and UK than he is in Japan, correct?

Shocking news: there will be another console game in the series.

Sonic continues to have a future on consoles despite SEGA stating it will be shifting to a greater emphasis on mobile developments, the head of Sonic Team Takashi Iizuka has told Japanese publication 4Gamer.

Asked if there was a possibility that Sonic would be moved to portable devices, Iizuka said: "Currently we don't ... Personally, I don't plan to stop Sonic for home-video game consoles. Don't worry about them! And enjoy!"

Well, people keep reading the headlines of these "Sega putting more focus on mobile gaming" and extrapolating it to "SEGA IS GOING MOBILE-ONLY RIP SEGA", so sadly news articles like these are necessary.

Question:

How big is Sega in general in Japan compared to the US and UK? I've heard that Sega and Sonic are bigger in the west than they are in Japan.

I think Sonic is generally more popular in the West (though I'm wondering how true that is anymore), but recently I've heard that Sega of Japan are doing remarkably well in terms of money. Like, their merchandise is everywhere over there.

It's one thing to make a spectacle. It's another to make a difference.

I should note that only one show came from Japan, and none of the manga lasted nearly as long as the American or British publications. But I won't say if that's evidence of Germans Love David Hasselhoff, or just an unimportant detail.

[up][up] Two, if you count the OVA, which was a failed pitch for an anime.

[up][up][up][up][up]Nobody's trying to argue that Sonic isn't more popular in the US than he Japan (oh he most certainly is.) It's just I think you guys seem to think Sonic is some superniche character in Japan when that isn't really the case tbh. It's just that, proportionally, Sonic is way bigger in America than in Japan.

[up]A massive Sega/Atlus/Sammy (does Sammy have any actual I Ps or no) wide crossover (Sonic's the only character) that's half dating sim, half going fast.

[up]I said Atlus too so there can be a mission where you go over to Chie's and she wants steak, but she doesn't have any steak so you go fast as fuck to Junes to get some steak.

[up] You mean Shin Megami Tensei, right? I get nitpicky about misspellings like that, sorry.

Anyway, with all the shipping fics the Sonic fandom spawns, I'm surprised there hasn't been a Sonic fangame that's a dating sim.
