The reason why I don't like Sonic is because I never found any of the games that fun, 2D or 3D. The fanbase just made things worse.
Sorry, I can't hear you from my FLYING METAL BOX!The fanbase cannot be pleased at all
Not fanbase in the world has been pleased
Hi there. Non-rabid Sonic fan here.
Just reminding you that not all of us fap to badly drawn porn of the characters and will defend them to the death as the greatest accomplishment of mankind. Nor will we all wish death upon Sega when the next Sonic game isn't a clone of the original.

The Sonic Fanbase is hopelessly splintered. So much so that SEGA really can't do anything without pissing somebody off.
This is true of most fanbases, but this one is so enormous that the people who hate any given decision can and will make their view known. This constant moaning has only encouraged the franchise's bad reputation and makes people list the games even lower just by repetition of the "Sonic Cycle" and "EVERYTHINGS SUCXXORS" crowd. A reputation not helped by controversial decisions and the very existence of Sonic2006 which make good-but-flawed games like Sonic Unleashed hard to defend.
It seems that only the Genesis series is immune to this effect, if only because it was most people's jumping on point. That's why SEGA is going out of their way to emulate the Genesis to pander to these guys with Sonic4 and Sonic Colors. So far, it actually seems to be working (somewhat).
Me, I've found that the only real way to enjoy this series without fan opinion pissing me off is to ignore all reviews and try things myself.

"When you do things right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all" Futurama, GodfellasSonic4 sucked, in my honest opinion.
Because again, it was really just a clone of the originals.
Sonic Colors kept the parts of the old games that worked and added in some new stuff, I thought it worked pretty well.

Why should Sega bother making two different versions of Sonic to appease haters? I hate Sonic, I'm not likely to buy his games regardless of what D its in unless its a gift for someone else who does like Sonic.

Looks like discussion about what it would take is going on, not just complaining.
However, posting to say what a bad idea the thread is, is just complaining.

...if you don’t love you’re dead, and if you do, they’ll kill you for it.Well Sonic Colors seems to have pieced most of the fanbase together. So it might be plausible to please the fanbase.

You got some dirt on you. Here's some more!Easier said than done.
If Sonic 4 is a clone of the Original
Then 3 and 2 are just Sonic 1 with new levels and some new abilities
But Sonic 4 is not a clone of the original.
It's an odd Sonic Rush variant made to superficially look like Sonic 1 and 2 while removing the dash button.
A clone of the original is what the naysayers actually want.
I have an idea about Sonic 4: The physics in the game felt off because Sega wanted it to be an iPhone game. Things like Sonic having slow acceleration, stopping in mid-air when you let go of the forward button and having the camera close to Sonic makes tons of sense for an iPhone game, where there's no tactile feedback from buttons and a small screen, and it really does control better than the Sonic 2 port. It just feels more precise, where in the Sonic 2 port Sonic's almost impossible to control without misjudging a jump or not stopping in time.
But the problem is, if you're not playing the iPhone game, the physics are now trying to compensate for a control scheme that's no longer there, and it just doesn't gel well with this game. It contradicts the Rush-like goasfastasmotherfuckingpossible level design, with in turn contradicts the emphasis on exploring. The game ends up punishing you for stopping and punishing you for not taking the time to explore the level.
It's still better than the Fan Remix.

The new It Just Bugs Me!I dislike Sonic 4 and it's not because it's a clone or because it isn't. It's because the thing is boring. Nothing sticks out about it save the homing attack. The music sucked. The level design I didn't care much about. The enemies and bosses were essentially just rehashed from the older games. Was it bad? No. It was mediocre. It was just so amazingly ok that it gave me no form of emotional extreme while playing. And that's terrible.
The closest I got to experiencing an emotional extreme while playing was when a friend and I decided to see how fast we could complete Act 1 of the first zone. That didn't last long and I have no interest in comparing my times to people who aren't my friend.
I want something that makes me go "Whoa..." again. Like Sonic 3 and Knuckles or Sonic Colors. 4 just...didn't. Fuck I'd rather have another CD or 2 or Shadow the Hedgehog. The first two of those I hated and bitched about and that was awesome feeling. The latter is just hilariously horrid.

Sonic has had the grand misfortune of being held up against the Mario franchise as a comparison. The second the excellence bar dropped on Sonic, the whole world noticed. Probably made worse for the fact that the little blue guy made a seemingly successful transition to 3D.
Say what you will about the 2D or 3D attempts of late, the public attitude turned on Sonic and the franchise has been struggling against the odds ever since. People will forgive you for a great number of sins as long as they like you; the inverse is just as true.
Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans. -John LennonSonic's best days are long behind him.
So I've heard. Always nice to see an underdog make a comeback. It'll take more than two though. Fingers crossed.
Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans. -John LennonI do agree that SEGA needs to ditch the Sonic Adventure mode of gameplay, and stick solely to the sidescrollers like Rush and Colors for awhile. Shadow, Heroes, and 2006 were either mediocre or complete disasters, to the degree that SEGA is shooting itself in its already gangrenous foot but putting out more games in that vein.
And although Sonic 4 is a step in the right direction, it's still going to be a long path back:

...but that's probably because I'm part of the fanbase's Team Switzerland.
Here's a suggestion that would probably please everyone, Sega:
Make two versions, a 2D and 3D version. Not talking 3DS either.
2D version qualities:
3D version qualities:
