Capcom called RE 6 a failure because they spent so much money on the game, even the sales they got for it wasn't enough to get a proper return. And honestly, if they tried to release another game like RE 6, it would bomb.

I think the thing is that unlike Resident Evil (which was fairly consistently popular throughout its lifespan), Darkstalkers wasn't particularly huge even in its heyday. Street Fighter eventually got a revival with IV partially because of the fact that before SF III almost killed the franchise, Street Fighter had been a massively successful franchise around the world, so it was clear that there was name recognition and a built-in audience for a potential revival. With Darkstalkers, at this point most people who have any sort of familiarity with the characters likely know them from the Capcom vs. series rather than ever having actually played Darkstalkers back in the day.

So let's say you were hypothetically in charge of bringing Darkstalkers back. What do you think could be done to make it sell well?

Oh god they probably would try and give us a Really 700 Years Old underage character wouldn't they. Noooo. There are a ton of archetypes they could throw in that'd set the internet on fire without giving us Anita in a bikini. A Minotaur or Oni with Amazonian Beauty, a Cute Witch that takes cues from Menat, maybe like a female version of Slender Man which would fit right in with the shapeshifter combat we're used to seeing.

Speaking of it'd probably have to remain 2D. Darkstalkers characters really contort themselves into so many shapes modeling them all for 3D would actually be harder.

[up][up]How well do 2D fighters sell?

The only mainstream ones still being made are Blazblue and its spinoffs. The original Blazblue sold very well, so I don't think it's inherently a hard sell so long as it's marketed well.

Seems like Capcom lost all their sprite artists though considering how cheaply they implemented D in the Darkstalkers collection.

I find it interesting that the most successful fighting game franchise of all time is the one the FGC denies the most.

Tekken's doing just fine, actually.

The FGC has no qualms with it either.

But you're talking about Smash. It's very atypical and has a different culture and origin from most fighting games so of course not everyone interested in more traditional fighters will like it.

Yeah, the fighting game franchise with the most sales is Tekken.

2nd is Street Fighter.

In recent years, however, Smash does seem to be selling the most. Overall it's still Tekken, though.

Yeah, I think Smash will be able to overtake both Tekken and Street Fighter in the next 1-2 years.

Ultimate has a lot of good hype surrounding it so far.

Smash has a much different audience than most traditional fighting games, which is why the FGC has issues with it.

You know, I have to wonder why Pit is obsessed with this site. It’s gonna ruin his life!

It's not like it's entirely shunned or unacknowledged either way. The game has two main event slots at EVO dedicated to it routinely, the biggest fighting game tournament in the world. I don't know what else you want from the FGC with regards to it.

I can totally deal without melee but Nintendo fanboys would riot if it got taken off.

I'll be honest, the smash only EVO watchers kind of disgust me because they really don't care about fighting games, just smash. And that's kind of crappy for an event that's supposed to celebrate competitive fighting games.

[up]What the hell is wrong with them watching EVO if they just want to watch one game? There are plenty of other fighting game fans who will say, watch the Guilty Gear matches but have no interest in watching Tekken, so are they insulting the EVO audience? Now, if it's the Smash fans who actively shit on other fighting games or take seats in main stage games that come before Melee, yeah those people suck, but you're acting like fans who just want to watch competitive Smash are on the same level.

FGC is cancerous to begin with, but I haven't heard anyone actually doing that before. Wouldn't surprise considering it's the FGC

You keep trash talking the FGC and I honestly don't get your beef. It's a community of people who enjoy fighting games. Typically competitively.

Beyond that, there's not all that much to hate.

Well the misogyny is kind of gross but that's a problem with competitive gaming in general if we're going to be honest.

If that answer was for me, Hashil, my answer is that I got dragged into Casual-Competitive Conflict, and it is incredibly prominent in the FGC, to the point of discrimination.

Any visit at Shoryuken or Eventhubs will show you that. One does not get into my level of cynicism and distaste on his own.
