Spider-Man General Discussion

Go To

This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
  • Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.

Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

     Original Thread OP
Since everyone likes talking about him. I know little about him(Ironically,I got nearly all I know about him from a Batman thread),but he's apparently important so I made this thread. Enjoy.

Very rude, symbiote

But they can't make their hosts shapeshift.

Well, they can turn them into (at least outwardly) other people, even of the opposite gender, like that story where Eddie infiltrated a church by posing as a nun, or that one where Flash (who wanted to lay low as Venom) spooked a few criminals as the Ghost Rider-ish "Hail Mary".

And lately Carnage has been going full Rubber Man, and generally comes off as more symbiote than human now.

Anyway, Jessica Drew's kid's name is the same as it is MC 2. He gonna get sick?

With all the time Cletus spends combined with Carnage, it makes since that the man barely qualifies as a human anymore.

Man, those 70's ASM newspaper comics are great. I'm interested in this Carol love interest Peter had back then. Aunt May remarks how more impressed she is with her than MJ, but then Carol starts acting more like MJ to get Peter's attention...then she briefly joins a love cult or something, when their leader is exposed by Spidey, they stalk her and drive her out of the strip, then MJ swoops back in (as Kraven's assistant) and offers Peter money to use his photography skills to help them catch Spidey...and Peter has to deal with paying the bills for another heart attack May has when she learns Carol had to flee town.

I assume someone wearing the symbiote can mimic the appearance of anyone or anything larger than the host, so a nun swaddled in robes or a very large superhero would be trivial to shapeshift into.

Must have looked like one really jacked nun...

And lately Carnage has been going full Rubber Man◊, and generally comes off as more symbiote than human now.

You can probably handwave that with Carnage having a much closer bond(what with the symbiote possessing him right after its birth), or... I guess that was a Deadpool writer misunderstanding how symbiotes work.

I assume someone wearing the symbiote can mimic the appearance of anyone or anything larger than the host, so a nun swaddled in robes or a very large superhero would be trivial to shapeshift into.

There's other things like Toxin posing as a short nerdy dude in order to covertly see his wife and son. So the implication is that they can make the hosts look like any other kind of person, but maybe they don't do it often because it's strenuous and difficult ("Nun Eddie" did look off, and would probably be unconvincing under scrutiny).

With all the time Cletus spends combined with Carnage, it makes since that the man barely qualifies as a human anymore.

I'm just waiting for them to go full Body Horror and reveal that the human form is nothing but a hollow and rebuildable shell that contains nothing but symbiote anymore. Dude's been doing things like reattaching his own severed head, growing a new one after it's been shot off, and pull himself back together after being reduced to puddles by attack helicopter missiles and Apocalypse's Gene Bomb.

[up] wild mass guess Only the Carnage Symbiote survives, but Cletus 'lives on' thanks to the Carnage symbiote having developed multiple personality disorder. wild mass guess

I think the personality of Carnage symbiote has been completely molded and defined by Cletus. The symbiote was a newborn when it bonded - it had none of its own.

[up] Pretty much. In those rare instances where it's alone and doing it's own thing, it's either borderline feral and instinctual, or acting and talking like Cletus.

I kind of feel bad for all these symbiotes having terrible first partners.

Didn't Toxin have it good though before what happened to Patrick?

For the most part, though the Venom symbiote explained that being the 1000th in its family line increased the likelihood of it being physically and/or mentally unstable, or something.

Scorn (who is also a 1000, though it wouldn't surprise me if that plot point was dropped) also seems fine, though the circumstances of its birth were weird.

So, two sorta good eggs from one bad one.

Thanks for the feedback.

I googled the Eddie!Nun one as well as Flash's Hail Mary persona (what is it with Venoms and nuns?). Eddie's disguise is literally him in a nun's outfit, so not too impressive. Flash's one is very different looking than his symbiote so some props there.

And yeah, the thing with Toxin shapefhifting into a completely different-looking person is what I was wondering about.

Thinking about it, I think the relative lack of using this ability might be a combination of it seeming too overpowered and because typically the symbiotes and/or their wearers are too violently insane to care about stealth.

If I may be controversial here...

...I still find the fact that so many people were suckered in by the whole "We're tearing down Peter and building up Otto to permanently replace and surpass him" thing to be gut-bustingly hilarious.

I am pretty sure people knew it was never permanent because nothing in comics can be but that doesn't mean people couldn't take issue with it presented as the new status quo, like the new company or whatever.

I'll admit they laid it on in a pretty hamfisted way but some people actually seemed to think it would stick. Hasn't anyone heard of a bluff before?

I was mad at it for the same reason I hate Spider-Verse: It just seemed like spiteful horseshit meant to artificially create a reaction from the reader on a metatextual level than to create emotion from any actual talent as a writer.

We all knew it wouldn't stick much like we all knew Steve would be back as Cap in a year when his anniversary and movie would come out much like we all know Thor will get a hammer and return to being Thor when his movie comes out.

When Marvel says something is a permanent change that will stick for eternity we all know it just means a year or two or until the movie comes out or the next too soon relaunch.

[up][up] Okay, that's fair, but doesn't that "metatextual reaction" sort of imply that they wanted people to believe it would stick? If you (general you) bought that, you get no sympathy from me.

I don't think anyone bought it would be permanant, they just hated peter's supporting cast getting less collective iq than a dog in order for it to last.

It did last. 30 issues or whatever is a really long time to put up with that level of crap.
