Spider-Man General Discussion

Go To

This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
  • Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.

Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

     Original Thread OP
Since everyone likes talking about him. I know little about him(Ironically,I got nearly all I know about him from a Batman thread),but he's apparently important so I made this thread. Enjoy.

Say, am I the only one who feels that if one of the "Holy Trinity" of Spider-Man's supporting cast is on the chopping block for #700, that Jonah is most likely? I'm just thinking that while May probably wouldn't produce the reaction Slott wanted since so many people find her annoying and history shows that any attempt at removing MJ is inherently impermanent, Jonah is both a fan-favorite and has never died, making his resurrectability a completely unknown factor. He's also been receiving a large amount of Character Development in Slott's run; maybe that's to make us feel really bad when he goes?

I also think Julia's a goner, too.

The new Avenging Spider-Man was pretty wonderful...

Out of curiosity, have you guys heard of an older Spider Man story in which Spidey is helping out a kid who was molested and tells the kid a story of someone he knew who had been molested. It turns out that person he knew is none other than Peter Parker, who had been molested by an unnamed creepy older boy with white hair. Then after telling the story, Spidey takes off and acts quite flippant and Angst? What Angst? about the fact that he had been molested. Some people have snarked about how this would explain Parker's actions in One More Day and how this would explain why he's such a Manchild. sad

I'm sure the writer behind the story had good intentions, but the ending seems to disrespect the topic. Interestingly enough, none of the other stories seem to ever bring this up. Perhaps the other writers are treating that story as non-canon and discontinuity.

It was a pretty terrible story.

I'm not sure it was meant to be in-continuity. It's never been touched on since then, and it was in a short one-off special comic, not one of his normal comics. So my own guess is that it's non-canon.

Fun Fact: When that comic was first being written, they were going to imply that Uncle Ben had molested Spider-Man!

Huh! And that one website Cracked.com pretty much tried to imply that Quicksilver was the molester! But if it had been Uncle Ben, that would have made him an Asshole Victim, wouldn't it? That, and it would have ruined the validity of the "With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility" line. sad

Still, I'm glad to know that this story is basically non-canon. I bet the other writers realized how disrespectful the story was, and took a "I want nothing to do with this!" approach.

I recall, years ago, reading a Spider-Man comic (for some reason, I want to say it was a special insert in the Sunday newspaper)with a storyline similar to the one Tigger describes; however, in that story the boy Pete was helping out had not yet been physically molested, but his female baby-sitter had started showing him porn and expressed a desire to touch him. Pete then tells his own story, in which, again, he's not actually physically molested, but an older male friend who'd been paying a lot of attention to him started giving him porn and expressing a desire to "touch each other like they do in the magazines." I wonder if it's the same story, or just something cooked up as part of a "fight molestation" campaign...or both, possibly...

I've heard people say that the molestation story is briefly mentioned by Spidey in an issue of the regular series, while he's swinging around the city at the beginning of the issue. I think I saw a scan of that page too. No idea which issue though.

BEHOLD! The super-person with the most fantastic origin in all comics: THE WALL! A wall fell on him, and thus he became a wall! So simple, yet so utterly, beautifully fantastic!

Can I stress just how much I love the Spider-Man newspaper strip? I got into it around 2009 (when they spoofed Brand New Day and revealed it was "all a dream" and that the real Peter was still married to MJ), and I've done some browsing about it and I'm swamped by the overwhelming negative sentiment towards it. Yeah it's a little daft and Spidey's incredibly useless at times, but it's still a fun and optimistic read, where good overcomes evil and heroes act like reasonable adults. Anyone else have a fondness for the strip?

The best story I've read of it so far was the Sandman saga where his daughter was kidnapped, followed closely by the one where Morbius ends up as the antagonist and eventually the hero of the whole story.

So anyone hear about Amazing ending at #700? Apparently its getting rebooted with a #1 in Marvel Now. People think its Superior thats the new book.

[up] I heard. I don't think Superior is the book, though. That's not a very Spider-Man adjective.

I think the idea behind the Marvel Now renumbering is to get New 52 money without nuking their continuity into oblivion. It's working from what I hear.

[up] I said earlier I think NOW is going to leave the New 52 in the dust. All the jumping-on-point-y with none of the reboot-y.

That they do.

Also this is probably going to be a new Spider-Man. Peter will die in 700 or have something happen to stop him from being Spidey. Then steps in 616 Miles.
