Yeah Detroit has been doing very poorly. Someone said it is kinda creepy now.

Ha! That's old news. We have a whole subculture here that explores the abandoned buildings:

Google "Explore Abandoned Detroit" for more. I am proud to announce that the Book-Cadillac Hotel has been refurbished. I myself have been to the top of the Michigan Central Train Station. It's scary and impressive. If I knew how to post pics here, I could share some.

Dude, I'm so down for urban spelunking, but Oahu is boring.

I saw the pics in teh article and I was all "wow, that would be totally awesome to explore some of those buildings!"

There's lots of good UE opportunities in detroit, I'm part of the LA UE community, and I see lots of photos from the stuff people out in Michigan find there.

Anyone who lives in Michigan knows this story all too well.

I liked Bing's idea of downsizing the city, but the citizens apparently would rather live in their crappy broken down homes than move and downsize...

I could see Parkour and Free Runners having a ball there.

[up]Screw it if it needs to be done it needs to be done.

That's it, field trip time.

I'll draft up a form for you all to have your moms to sign.

I am a bit too old for field trip forms. :P

Besides I have already explored a dieing city scape. Waco, Texas is a nice example.

^ Just noticed my terrible sentence structure up there.

Hmm, fits in with Detroit, though.

@Tufel:

Yeah, stupid freedoms and laws prevent us from kicking them out of their shanty homes and start living in a smaller and safer community.

Looks kind of like what New York looked like before Rudy Giuliani.

They could still live where they are they just wouldn't be part of the city. Downsize the city to save the city instead of letting it collapse. It would make more sense for those who would end up outside the city to organize into smaller townships instead of relying on dieing city proper.

Damn, I'd be down for some urban exploring of Detroit if a group is organized. I don't live too far from the D, myself.

Cause I'd rather not go poking around abandoned buildings in Detroit and get attacked by crazed homeless. I'm not the guy from Condemned 1 and 2.

I've always wanted to design a building that looked like it was falling apart inside. Then use it for laser tag or something.

We have some MOUT villages like that.. Designed to look like small arabic villages, and then halfway torn down and shot up before they are ready for training.

[up] Like that, only for civilians. And possibly add zombies. And have it be more post-apoc instead of a current warzone.

Last time I was in Detroit, driving through, a few months ago, the place looked basically like a wretched hive of scum and villainy. Of course, it's made that much more awesome where, I'm driving through this pristine highway in Canada with these rest stops that have these huge signs about how it is gov-funded, and they look like the awesomest buildings in the world. Then I get to Detroit.

It'd actually be pretty cool if someone organized a giant paintball war in one of these buildings.

It'd be like Call Of Duty, only better!
